Nonsense

Imagine bringing 2 to 3 bills for one house.
On each bill, you bill them 150 - 170 which will equal 300k per month

Because they don’t have a prepaid meter. That is theft on their behalf
Re: Electricity Consumers To Pay Fines For Illegal Connection, Meter By-Pass by gabbytabby: 6:36am On Feb 19, 2025
This is daylight robbery I just paid 230k for prepaid meter for what the electricity company say is their property. The whole system is so unfair hence understandably some of the retaliatory practices.

For you buying meter with your own personal money is it not corruption ?

Even in advanced countries some Eastern European Tenants have engaged in this practice it’s just not rampant.

When a company is not strong enough, it should not start at all. Why should bypassing be possible at all in the first place? Nigeria is just an anyhow place abeg.

What's the fine for estimated billing and failure to provide meters?
Re: Electricity Consumers To Pay Fines For Illegal Connection, Meter By-Pass by AerialMapper: 6:59am On Feb 19, 2025
Where is my whistle!

NERC, you are a weak regulator and no one regards you. Just keep quiet cos you have no regulatory control over the Discos.

WHO do you think does the by-pass for most electricity thieves? It is the staff of the Discos!

Nigerians are too impoverished to look away from crime and that is why corruption thrives! The only people who are booked for by-pass when caught are those who do not have enough to bribe the enforcement team (who are sometimes given information by the technician who did the bypass so they can extort the thief) when they come on "routine" checks!

Fix the system, pay good wages, fix the economy, drive down prices of goods and services and people won't enable crime or steal electricity..

Fine is not new in that sector. Their staff will sabotage it. Some collect N50k upwards. During general enforcement exercise it may be difficult to pocket such money. They have terrible staff, some of them during installation of meters will tell the house owner that they can help them do bypass. Yet, the same will sell them out much later. Bypass will reduce significantly by installing meters on the electricity polls.
It take two to tangle. Those staffs you are accusing head-on are Nigerians like you. So their corrupt act is not different from yours.

Moreso, you lack know knowledge of the system you sound very knowledgeable about. The installers are not staffs of the company. They are road-side electricians who apply to the contractor company to install meters. They are paid per installation.

Nigeria is a lawless country ..... The company do not care about how customers get what they pay for . They will never repair or replace faulty transformers yet can migrate you from band E to A claiming that the supply to your area is stable... But how can we enjoy stable supply with bad transformers and poor wire network? Another issue is that no matter how low your current is, your prepaid meter is still reading for what can hardly power your appliances.
I am currently facing this issue, we have been battling with low current since almost two weeks, the kind of light that can't charge an android phone, yet these unfortunate people are claiming we are in Band A, and won't even bother to fix it.

This is very good.

However, what happens when they give you an account to pay for the supply of meters and refuse to supply smart meters for two years?

What happens when they arbitrarily give you a bill to pay, and there is no corresponding electricity supply?

What happens when they give you a third-party account to pay for the meter?

Government workers or public servants have perfected a process to strangulate the people.

Someone, please help answer these questions. I want to be educated

There are special kind of meters used around factories (majorly nylon makers), those meters na die, you might put on only your fan and get to see you’ve consumed 10 unit of power at exorbitant rates o😂😂😂.

I nearly craze last year with the humongous money I had to pay in a month. Was there light? Yes, 20/24 is certain

If the electricity tarrrif is cheap, people won't bypass. What happened to when Nepa was giving household outrageous estimated billing? To hell with their bypassing law

DISCOs imposing fines, who will hold them for their own criminal acts?

Imagine being charged for power when you haven't connected at all. Or rather the insane estimated bills they reap people off with, paying for utter darkness! That's why most times I don't blame those that japa, so many injustices and corrupt practices have been normalized.
God bless you dear👍👍😭😭
Re: Electricity Consumers To Pay Fines For Illegal Connection, Meter By-Pass by gulfer: 8:41am On Feb 19, 2025
Everything is skewed against the consumer in Nigeria, there's never been any penalty for estimated billing and non provision of meters (prepaid and postpaid); even non adherence to their own SLAs etc. Just look at every type of consumer services provided in the country undecided undecided undecided

Give them meter first...you have no right to do that until all your customers are metered

Googledotcom:
Consequences Nepa has to pay for giving people bill of almost 70k in postpaid despite not consuming up to 2k.

Person dey only use TV, fan and bulb yet Nepa dey bill am almost 70k
So that can be resolved. Keep records of the current monthly over estimated bills. Also have records of communication with them by physically delivered and acknowledged letter or email complaining of the huge estimated bill stating the few items you use in your house. Pay what you estimate is your average use monthly, of course you will have accumulated bills on your account.
Now when you eventually receive a prepaid meter they will want to place you on a monthly payment plan to clear your old bills, that is where you act. With your new meter keep records of your purchase of units for the next 3 months, with that you know how much you monthly usage is compared to how much they were estimating for you previously. The disparity will be much.
Now write to nepa showing evidence you spend eg 5k monthly instead of the 70k estimated bill they were giving you which has accumulated to eg 300k. Tell them it is not your debt, instead they owe you money. You will likely be invited to reconciliation. They will make you an offer you may refuse. After 1 month petition the closest NERC forum closest to you (email or letter) with your evidence. NERC will mediate by forwarding your petition to the disco asking for their response. The disco will (as in my case) will invite you again to negotiate ie cancel or slash the debt. You may agree, or if you disagree nerc invites both parties and mediate, likely slashing your bill, cancelling or even making the disco credit your meter aza.
