What do hospitals do with the gowns somebody died in? Are they thrown away or do they just wash them?

The gown would probably not even be taken off; at least not immediately. The body may be taken away in the same clothing.
Re: What Do Hospitals Do With The Gowns Somebody Died In? by GeneralPula: 1:34pm On Feb 20, 2025
It solely depends on the hospital..

Is it only gown you’re worried about. What about the bed and the bed spread the patient died on? What about the ward space the patient died in? I guess they discard everything. Everything is washed and repackaged for the next patient. 🙄 Yinmu

I don't know why people do as if they won't die or death is contagious

Most of us wear cloths left by our loved ones- Sweater wore by granny when she died, I am still wearing it till date, my mum and her siblings still wears her cloths

It's someone that is a mortician - you run away from them?

It's someone is Doc or nurse that were attending to the person before he or she died- they are sent to exile?

Most people has bought Accident cars- probably the victim died , but car is repaired and sold out

What of the hospital beds?- they keep throwing each of them away ?

In one way or the other, what you are using today that was used by someone, the person may have died , that's just it

I believe they are are washed and used again for another patient except if it has to do with fluids that pose risk to health , they may be discarded

In my own opinion

Hospitals follow strict protocols for handling and disposing of patient gowns, especially those worn by patients who have passed away. The procedures may vary depending on the hospital's policies and local regulations, but here's a general overview:

Handling and Disinfection
1. Immediate removal: After a patient passes away, the gown is immediately removed and placed in a designated container or bag for soiled linen.
2. Disinfection: The gown is then washed and disinfected according to the hospital's laundry protocols, which typically involve high-temperature washing and drying.

Laundry Protocols
1. Separate washing: Soiled linen, including gowns worn by patients who have passed away, is washed separately from other hospital laundry.
2. High-temperature washing: The washing process involves high temperatures (usually above 140°F) to kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms.
3. Sanitizing: The laundry is sanitized using disinfectants or sanitizers to further reduce the risk of infection.

Disposal or Reuse
1. Reuse: If the gown is still in good condition after washing and disinfection, it may be reused in non-patient care areas, such as administrative offices or for cleaning purposes.
2. Disposal: If the gown is damaged, worn out, or contaminated with bodily fluids, it is disposed of according to the hospital's biohazard waste management protocols.

Hospitals prioritize infection control and patient safety, ensuring that all laundry, including gowns worn by patients who have passed away, is handled and processed according to strict protocols.
