Why can't they impose a speed limit of 30 to 40 mph per hour for these vehicles and make the companies liable with heavy fines if they cause an accident or spillage. Thats the right thing to do, not ban them. Due to economics of scale, transporting fuel will now be expensive and the consumer will the the major loser. 😠😠😠.

Bro calm down. Look we know Dangote has the capacity to supply and meet Nigeria's demand. These guys are tacitly encouraging smuggling that is why they are making excuses to import fuel. Is it not a disgrace that NNPC today cannot accurately predict Nigeria's PMS demand.

Regardless, the fact is that fuel imports have fallen massively.

It was always going to happen once the refineries came on stream.

As at 2012, we were importing over 40 million liters a day. Under buhari , it went up to as high as 90 million (some even said 100 million self).

As per smuggling, the thing is, government is not paying subsidy. So, no more government money involved...anyone smuggling fuel, it is the importers that lose.

The thing is, times are changing. Once the refineries came on line, the end of importing fuel was on the horizon. We are now making half the fuel we consume here. IN 2012, it was less than 10%, worse under Buhari.

We've come a long way since the bad days of massive subsides and smuggling of subsidsed fuel under previous governments. You don't have to like this government or any other government to aprpeciate that...and I don't really like this government, but for the first time in decades, we are producting refined products at home. And more people are picking up licences.

That is not my area of specialization. But one solution can be to promote the use of underground pipelines in transporting petroleum products.

Create an alternative, if it is more effective and efficient, the operators in the market would adopt it.

No, I can't say I do. Google does not have much information about it either.

Sometime around 2011 or before, petroleum products was transported through this type of pipeline you talked about from Port Harcourt to Enugu via the ukwa asix of Abia State.

Then a lot of artisans were hardworking around the Ihie Alaoji axis, but along the line people got idea on how to drill metal with plastic and a lot of bunk spread up around that asix, a lot of security personnel's were drafted to that region but they became corrupted and even started having Thier own bunks. Ihie became a home of bottle bunkers, people filled 33,000 litres tankers with diesel, fuel or kerosene and they had informants of what and when any product will be flowing.
Then 50 litres of any thing was 1k whilst to bring it from the bush to town was 400 naira.
Most times this bunk caught fire and a lot of people died.
Government stopped flowing products through that pipeline and it led to a high level of kidnapping as a lot of them went bust , that was the Osisikanku era, a bikeman who had a gun stealing petroleum products via the pipeline with his boys , before he became a political assassin and a kidnapper .
So flowing petroleum products via pipeline buried 6 feet underground is a very good idea but trust me without advanced and I mean advanced monitoring technologies it will be breached.

The cheapest option remains overhaul generally of our transportation system, not just to build roads and give people drivers licence, a lot needs to be done.
