Blackout Looms As Workers Give Kaduna Electric 7-day Ultimatum by olatade(op): 6:53am On Feb 22, 2025
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the management of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company to return to the negotiation table regarding the ‘service no longer required’ letters given to some affected staff.

The union in a statement issued by its Zonal Organising Secretary 1, North West zone, Ayuba Pukat accused the management of going ahead to serve the affected staff the new letters despite talks between the union and the management.

Recall that on 3rd February, 2025, staff of Kaduna Electric embarked on an indefinite strike over an alleged plan by the management to dismiss over 900 workers among other grievances which left residents of the state in blackout for five days.

The management of the electricity company through its Head, Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi has however clarified that contrary to claims by labour unions that 900 staff members were affected, the company confirmed that ‘services no longer required’ letters were issued to 450 employees.

Weekend Trust further recalls that it took the intervention of Governor Uba Sani for workers to suspend the 5-day strike action after which it was resolved that both the management and the labour union meet together and take a decision on the planned downsising of the workforce, while the management will also halt its earlier decision to sack workers.

But issuing the new ultimatum in a letter addressed to the Managing Director titled: ‘Notice of seven days’ ultimatum for total withdrawal of service in Kaduna electric’, Pukat said, “It is disheartening that Kaduna Electric management do not see reasons to call the union back to the negotiation table to consider the concern raised.”

“We are by this giving Kaduna Electric seven (7) days ultimatum to return back to the negotiation table. Failure to do so will not guarantee industrial peace in the company.”

Why are organisations in Nigeria heartless?

How can you lay someone in your service for 10 years off and give him 400,000 as exit token? These guys are heartless.

The problem is obvious.

The power companies are forced to charge below market prices for most consumers, and at least 40% of consumers do not pay for power.

So they run at a loss and are forced to lay off workers

Hence the strike.

No similar strikes in the GSM sector.

Put everyone on band A, force everyone to pay for power they consume, cut off people who do not pay, and you will see improvements.

But anyone who suggests the above is an agbado.

The power sector is not working because most Nigerians do not pay for 24 hour power.

You can call me a government defender. It still doesn't change the fact.

Wide swathes of this country, there are people who bypass meters, or simply do not pay for power used, or plead poverty and severely underpay for power.

And at the end there are disco staff who even facilitate stealing of power.

If you want better power, then everyone must pay 200 naira or more per unit. Everyone must be metered. The power companies will earn a profit which would enable them attract more investment and eventually pay for better power.

Politicans have nothing to do with it. Your average politicans would even want 24 hours light. Keeps people busy and stops them from begging him or her.

The thing is, power has been privatized. A long time ago. We are guilty of treating it as if it hasn't

Have we not been in perpetual blackout all this while. Whether or not negotiation table is returned to, it will make no difference.

What do you mean 40% do not pay for power? How did you come about such percentage?

Even those who use estimated billing, them still dey carry ladder up and down to check their monthly bills and disconnect any one who didn't pay for the month... Infact it's a serious issue because you'll see people running around gathering money to pay and avoid disconnection when it's that time of the month. I know because I don experience am.
It's also not that easy to bypass prepaid meters these days because of heavy fine and regular routine checks... So if you see compound with 6 flats, it's very possible say only one bypass or even non at all.

So your 40% is totally wrong... Scrap that.

Because KEDC is not making enough to pay them due to

1. Government polices that force the company to sell power at a loss overall.

2. Most Nigerians not paying or underpaying for power

No money, no salary

Removal of subsidy, multiplied taxation means decline of disposable income and purchasing power.

On the other hand,if you want 24 hour power, you would have to get your government to commit to paying 10 billion dollarsfrom the budget yearly for the next ten years to get there

The money would be replaced by more loans.

Remember that our debt is 120 trillion naira and counting.

Best to pay from the pocket.

Calling me agbado and government supporter does not change that fact.

Thanks to subsidy removal in petrol we have gone from importing 100 m liters of fuel a day to 25 million or less and producing 25 million or more at home for domestic consumption. We also export refined product. The sad thing is all that could have happened since 2012.

Wrong suggestions.
My suggestions:
Metre everyone
Make good laws against defaulters
Make scapegoat of few defaulters
And you will get the best out of power supply.

You also have to charge for power at market price for everyone.

I mean if you ran a business where only 20 percent of your customers were paying in full would it survive?

Government subsides, inadequate as they are barely keep the sector running but are not enough for profitablity.

And people bypass meters. They form a large percentage of those who do not pay.
