You do not need to take part in a coup d’etat to be chosen as leader. Chief Obafemi Awolowo was in jail for treasonable felony when the first military coup took place on January 15, 1966. The young majors wanted to make him Prime Minister.https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/01/awolowo-coup-of-january-1966/ |

I get tired with all these attempt to change the narrative of what happened, but guess what? It's not gonna fly. |

EmperorIsaac:The plot failed nau. Awo treacherous plan was twarted by Obienu and the most senior officer took over. Unlike when Ironsi died and Ogundipe the coward refused to take over. Lol. Ogundipe is another person responsible for the war |

EmperorIsaac:Their have been many coups in Nigeria, in fact in West Africa, why is this the only one people keep trying to rewrite history over and over again? In the last successful coup in Nigeria, Abacha took over power with the full support of M.K.O Abiola, with what history showed us, does that now mean it was an Abiola coup...I mean who was the ultimate beneficiary? Look only God knows the hearts of men, people can say they love you like there is no tomorrow and claim they are planning coups for you, but ACTIONS speak louder than words! These young men embarked on a bloody coup that was 95% successful and all of a sudden when their kinsmen spoke to them in hushed voices they reversed course and gave up without a fight. Eventually their kinsman took over. That is a fact...and Awolowo continued to rot in jail for another 6 months until Gowon ensured he was released on only his 2nd day as Head of State with no strings attached, another indisputable fact. Logically, if anyone wanted to call any coup Awolowo's coup, it would be Gowon's own! Anything else is just idle chit chat. |

Una wan rewrite history abi as that coup hook Igbo people for throat with Yoruba and Hausa till today. Instead of una to come out and say sorry and change. Una still de lie. It is well. |

AndroBlaze:According to Ejoor’s account of that day, when he entered the battalion HQ office, he saluted the GOC. As Ironsi turned around and saw it was Ejoor, he quickly drew his service pistol. Ejoor was stunned at Ironsi’s response to his cordial salute. “Ha, David, are you with me or against me?” the GOC said. Ejoor replied, “You are my commanding officer, whatever it is, I am with you.” Ironsi said with the event of the past 4 hours things had been confusing. He did not trust any officer. He then began to narrate the event as he saw it. He spoke of how Pam warned him of an ongoing mutiny on phone, how he dressed up, tried to rouse the Federal Guards barracks, how on the way to Ikeja he met Captain Ogbo Oji and some of the mutineers on Carter Bridge – one of the two bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland – and how he bluffed his way through and proceeded to Ikeja to rouse the battalion. Oji was an officer and he was too high to be manning a roadblock in particular when there was a severe shortage of officers for the Revolution. What happened was Oji was the second in command to Major Okafor whose Federal Guards unit was detailed to eliminate Maimalari. At some minutes past 4 o’clock, after Ademoyega drove over to tell them at Maimalari residence that the Brigadier had been killed, Okafor ordered Oji and four NCOs to check the situation in 2nd battalion and see if Obienu’s unit had arrived from Abeokuta. En route, he waited on Carter Bridge to get the situation report from the unit Ademoyega posted there to prevent enemy forces from disturbing their Revolution and to ensure key targets did not escape. Oji did not even know there had been a mutiny within a mutiny, that their operational base at Federal Guards Officer’s Mess had been compromised, and that the convoy of his fellow conspirators was 15 minutes behind him en-route to Ikeja too. Then Ironsi turned up at the roadblock on the bridge in his staff car accompanied by escorts. "A mutiny within a mutiny" |

Now this is their narrative..... A military man wants to hijack a civilian govt in order to hand over government to another civilian (Awo) who happens to be imprisoned at that time.. On what legality/ illegality will he, Awo be able to hold-on to power since he does not have access to guns to create fear like the military? Will the military in an impossible scenario guide Awo, a civilian? where else in the world has this ever happened? Now the coup was executed and their real intent became known when they killed leaders from other tribes and left theirs alive. They even added salt to injury by handing over the reigns of government to their tribal military colleague, and Awo who they deceived others that they were fighting for was never set free..... Now, let's even agree that their initial intent was to set Awo free, then I ask this question. What is their concern with freeing Awo, is he their family member? Only a foolish man will leave his own issue and say he wants to help another man out with his own issue. Do you use Panadol for another man's headache? Only a fool does that. Make these ibo guys keep on living in fool's paradise. We know them and we are not deceived by their efforts to change the narrative cos we know them better now...... only thing we are just waiting for is the time to be right for we, Yorubas to send them all packing back to their enclave.... I know the D-day is getting nearer. |

2mch:Awolowo treachery failed because Obienu squash his coupe and Ironsi was the highest ranking officer to benefit. When northerners did their own Yoruba was next in line but he ran away like a coward |
