AFCON not a major tournament – Jamie Carragher

Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, has dismissed the Africa Cup of Nations as a major tournament.

Carragher argued this following the Reds’ 2-0 win at Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

Egyptian superstar, Mohamed Salah, continued his stunning form this season with a goal and an assist for Dominik Szobozslai at the Etihad.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher suggested that Salah’s nationality and Egypt’s lack of success on the global stage could hinder the player’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or this year.

He said: “I think the problem [is] the fact he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in the major tournament as such or maybe got a great chance of winning.

“I think it’s either the Champions League or the major tournament.

Normally, the player who excels in that, like Vini Jr and (Kylian) Mbappe right now, Real Madrid looking really good going for the Champions League.”

Former Manchester City defender, Micah Richards, hit back at Carragher saying, “Just to say, AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are at home saying ‘they aren’t taking it seriously’. AFCON is a big tournament, just so you know.”

Carragher responded by questioning if Egypt would be contenders for the World Cup, because according to him, only the biggest international competitions influence the Ballon d’Or race.

However, ex-England striker, Daniel Sturridge shut down the argument, saying, “If you win the Euros or Copa America, it’s deemed to be big, so the AFCON is on the same level.

I think AFCON is a major tournament just like Euros & Copa America.

It's just that the quality of football from the participating African countries is lower than their counterparts in Europe & South America.

Yes, Salah would have stood more chance of winning Ballon d'Or if he was from Spain, Brazil or Argentina.
At bolded it is obvious you didn't even watch the last AFCON

You are wrong; I watched all the last AFCON matches.
If the quality of African football is higher, how come African countries struggle to qualify from group stages in World Cup?

Morroco played in the semi finals of the last world cup
Eliminating Portugal and Spain

So why are you celebrating as big achievement, an isolated case of Morocco making it to the S/Final, when other countries have exceeded that severally & won the WC?

Who are the many countries from South America, North America and Asia that has done that and won the world cup?

Wrong analysis.

How many African countries are allowed to play in the World Cup compared to European countries?

Africa has 4 or 5 places while Europe has 16 places, or is it 18?

That gives Europe a huge statistical advantage over Africa, making them far more likely to qualify for the latter stages of the tournament.

South America has only 12 countries or so, so if 5 represent them, it’s still fair.

But Africa has 54 countries out of which only 4 or 5 can compete, so Africa is terribly under represented at the World Cup.

Africa should have at least the same number of countries as Europe in the World Cup or it is not fair and you can’t judge them.

I swear, if you allow 16 African countries to compete at the World Cup, one of them will win that World Cup. Or reach the final at least.

And it doesn’t have to be a Senegal or Nigeria or Morocco or Ivory Coast or Cameroon.

Even a solid team from MALI can reach the final, especially if there is fair officiating.

It’s a numbers game. The more teams from your continent, the more likely your success.

Your argument is flawed. So if Africa is given 20 slots, an African country will win the World? That's laughable.
Even if South America was given only 2slots and Brazil & Argentina emerge, it will not in anyway reduce the chances of Brazil or Argentina winning the world cup.

The argument is about quality of football among African Countries being lower. If you argue otherwise, why has an African country not won the World Cup?
Definitely it's not because of number of slots for Africa.

Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, England... have all won the World Cup & several others have played in the Final.

How many Finals has an African country played, not to talk of winning the Cup?
And you still argue that quality of football in Africa is not lower than in Europe & South America?
Sentiments aside, this shouldn't be a subject for argument.

You have not provided any convincing argument to prove otherwise.

Don't blame him, the last time his country won a major tournament he wasn't even alive yet.

AFCON is definitely a major tournament, the vast majority of players at the competition play in the best leagues in the world.

We should never allow ourselves to be talked down on by any white miscreant.

It's only ''laughable'' to you because you are an ignorant, LOW IQ dunce with rocks for brains.

I SAID USE YOUR BRAIN.

DON'T YOU HAVE A BRAIN?

SOUTH AMERICA HAS ONLY 12 COUNTRIES.

SO IF ONLY 2 COUNTRIES REPRESENT THEM THEY ARE STILL BETTER REPRESENTED THAN AFRICA WITH 54 COUNTRIES AND ONLY 4 OR 5 SLOTS.

DON'T TELL ME RUBBISH ABOUT BRAZIL OR ARGENTINA. THOSE ARE OUTLIERS.

WHY DON'T YOU USE THE SAME 'BRAZIL' AND 'ARGENTINA' ARGUMENT TO GIVE EUROPE ONLY 4 SLOTS INSTEAD OF 18?

IS IT BECAUSE THERE IS A 'BRAZIL' AND 'ARGENTINA' THAT YOU MUST DENY AFRICA ITS RIGHTFUL NUMBER OF SLOTS IN THE WORLD CUP, AND THEN STUPIDLY WAVE ''BRAZIL'' AND ''ARGENTINA'' IN OUR FACES?

GET LOST WITH THAT BLASTED BULLSHIIT.

ARRANT RUBBISH.
