A former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has dismissed speculations about his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party, saying he has no intention of joining the party.

El-Rufai, who spoke on Arise TV on Monday night, said his meetings with politicians from other parties had been misinterpreted, clarifying that his interactions did not indicate plans to leave the All Progressives Congress.

He said, “It should be clear that the fact that I’m in the APC doesn’t mean that I cannot visit a friend of mine who is in the PDP or SDP. So anytime I visit anyone that is not in APC, they say, ‘Oh, he’s thinking of leaving the party.’

“In fact, about two months ago, one character in Kaduna posted on his Facebook page that I’ve collected a PDP membership card in my ward. It was totally untrue.

When I visited my brother and friend Shehu Gabam at the SDP headquarters, they said, ‘Oh, he has joined the SDP.’ Again, not true.”

The former governor, however, did not rule out the possibility of leaving the APC if the party does not return to its founding principles.

He added, “I don’t know where I will end up if the APC doesn’t come back to where we started. But one thing I can tell you for sure is that PDP is not a party that I will go to, ever. I have thought about that. I’ve decided that long ago, and nothing has changed. In fact, if anything, PDP has gotten worse; rule out PDP.

While reiterating his rejection of the PDP, El-Rufai left room for possible realignment if the APC fails to address its internal challenges.

“But PDP, no. Other parties, possibly, if the APC doesn’t sort itself out,” he said.

El-Rufai confirmed meeting with PDP leaders in Kaduna but maintained that it was not politically motivated.

“I met with PDP leadership in Kaduna a couple of days ago. The state leadership of the party came to see me, and I will meet with them. You know, I’m a public figure in my state, and at my age, and based on the responsibilities I have held, I am a leader of some sort,” he said.

The former governor reiterated that he would continue to meet with political figures across party lines, emphasising that such interactions should not be mistaken for defection.

“If people say they want to see me, I’m not going to say, ‘You are PDP, I won’t see you,’ or ‘You are SDP’, I will only meet with APC people.’ It is my duty to meet with everyone. It is my duty to guide and mentor young people across partisan divides. So, I meet with people but the moment I meet with everyone, everything is reduced to politics,” he added.

It’s like you’re new to knowing Nigerian politicians

I am dissapointed in Rufai talking like a baby with loose mouth. It shows the level of his rotten mindset. If Rufai screening had been successful as Tinubu minister, Rufai won't have been talking bad of Tinubu everywhere instead he would have been praising him. It means Rufai is a selfish politician that wants BD things to happen to Tinubu and Nigeria politically so far he never gets it.

His talking like parrot ruin his political career and looks like southern Kaduna spell working on him till he made political miscalculation. He might end up being more political useless if he does not humble himself and align himself now to work with APC and Tinubu. He is still rating himself high not knowing he is becoming more useless and irrelevant in political arena. Even when it gets to turn of the North, he may not command any relevance again. He may continue to wail till 2031 when Tinubu will be done

Na El Rufai Vs Nuhu Ribadu battle for the North. If Kassim Shettima gets Tinubu's second term ticket as VP and Tinubu manages to win...then, Shettima go come to the picture.

One takeaway, which is not new..but an emphasis, from El Rufai's interview is that, politicians are in politics to win elections...all of their permutation and combinations are about winning. They form alliance and support only those they believe can win elections. This is very deep and true today till tomorrow.

As for the 2027 race...well, it's sad the opposition are not doing what is needed to wrestle power from this Tinubu's administration. Elections cannot be less than 2 years away and all we see is internal crisis and fragmentations of oppositions.

All opposition heavyweight...PDP, LP, NNPP have to come together under one umbrella, if they are really interested in defeating this monster APC. Anything short...na Tinubu's second term straight!

I have said it in 2 threads already, all this noise from ElRufai is a cry for help. His problem is that he is a baby politician and he has always been in power on the strength of the political power or structure of others. All his public offices were appointments standing on the shoulders of giants and his governorship election was won on the strength of Buhari and APC.

The mistake technocrats in Nigeria seem to make time and time again is they get high on the positions they occupy and start to think of themselves as politicians and disrespect the game. It is the same error Osinbajo made.

ElRufai is a baby politician and he will learn politics by force if he says he wants to remain a politician.

He said it himself in the interview that he is a technocrat not a politician. Well if you want to be a politician in Nigeria he needs to stop thinking like a technocrat! To start with he revealed his hand too early….big error! a true Nigerian politician would bid his time before making his move.

If the words of Nigerian politicians were worth something, Nigeria would be better than America today.
