IGP Orders Two-Month Police Watch At Osun Council Offices Amid Power Tussle

As the political tension over local government control in Osun State intensifies, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the tactical squad deployed to the state to remain stationed at local government secretariats for the next two months.

A high-ranking police source, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the squad has been mandated to secure the secretariats and prevent any breakdown of law and order amid the ongoing leadership tussle.

The crisis erupted following the swearing-in of newly elected Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) local government chairmen by Governor Ademola Adeleke, despite opposition from the All Progressives Congress (APC). The APC has maintained that a recent Court of Appeal ruling reinstated their previously elected LG chairmen, who were removed from office in 2022.

To prevent clashes, Governor Adeleke has instructed the new PDP chairmen and councillors to stay away from the secretariats until legal disputes are resolved. However, APC leaders insist they remain the legitimate LG officials and have vowed to take measures, including urging banks to freeze council accounts, to prevent the PDP chairmen from accessing funds.

Security operatives, deployed by the IG, are expected to ensure order at the council secretariats as tensions persist. Multiple sources indicate that the tactical teams will remain in Osogbo and other parts of the state until further notice.

Meanwhile, Governor Adeleke has assured that his administration acted within the confines of the law in conducting the LG elections. He has called on the newly elected officials to focus on governance and uphold democratic values.

Nigeria politics is the more you look, the less you see

It's quite unfortunate that the citizen suffers when those who are supposed to represent their interest choose to do otherwise

Local government elections supposed to be conducted alongside Presidential & Governorship election

If we are not too wasteful in this country, we don't need senate, & house of rep

Governors can serve as senators & sit twice in a month afterall they have VGs

Local Government Chairmen can serve as Rep and sit twice in Abuja afterall they also have VCs

Citizens should open their eyes and see that these people are not for the masses but for themselves

This is why State Police is the only way forward.

State Police, Civilian Police Service Commission, Regional Renumeration through Regional Development Commission (with statutory allocation on d CRF)

Providing "security" for illegal Council shiamen because the Police insecurity force is controlled by Tinubu Apc.

Adopting rascality to guide rascality. Apc has totally destroyed what was left of Rule of Law

Have the Chairmen presented the Local Government Annual budget to Councillors? When are they starting the business of governance than taking over the Council Headquarters? Who is signing the subvention received by heads of local government ministries this week?

They should let the workers run the LGAs until the politicians settle.

Re: IGP Orders Two-month Police Watch At Osun Council Offices Amid Power Tussle by Eleph(m):
Pro APC Police. Always quick at dancing to the tune of the government at the centre.
On the Edo State episode, the Attorney General only paid a lip service by condemning the act of the figurative governor who is scared of numbers and up till this moment the police stood aloof against the illegality of the Edo State governor.
What is sauce for the goose is supposed to be sauce for the gander not in the case of Nigeria where the centre wants it all at all costs.
The police hitherto have always been redundant before apart from being seen at roadblocks doing their usual thing unfortunately for these redeployed ones, no more daily contributions except from the till of the LG coffers in the form of special duties expenses.
Different strokes for different folks!
Even the judiciary is fast losing its self respect as an unbiased adjudicator in issues involving the ruling party at the centre and other political parties.
