It's not far, go to Iganmu after SURULERE, you'll see for yourself .
Don't come here to give us bad energy
Some Nigerians just hate good news/good things. See a lot of them above with their bad energy this early morning.

Theatre arts and play are dead and buried in Nigeria.; renovated for owambe parties and political meetings undecided undecided undecided
You can't say that. Terra Kulture in VI still hosts sold out plays on a regular. All that is needed is good publicity and big names to act in your plays.

Give me small gist about the place. The only time I went inside the place was for a church member's wedding in 2001, and the hall was still nice at the time.
In the 80s this was the place to be.

All the great black American bands played there to huge crowds.

Shalamar, Kool & the Gang, Stevie Wonder, Delegation, Dynasty, the Commodores, Earth Wind and Fire, and many others..

Those days, once there was a concert, secondary schools would pack their students in their school buses and go there.

I was one of them, and we felt like young princes and princesses strutting around in those huge, red-carpeted, air-conditioned halls.

Those days were so sweet....But it seems we are getting back there now...

Now that we have our Afrobeats stars we will have even more days to go and enjoy there. cool cool

This is a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) under a new dispensation.

Anything with private sector investment is always well-maintained, so you can forget about that.
Thanks for the comment.

And from the multi purpose halls for events.

What a world class edifice. Good heavens!

If this place was in another African country, you people won't let us hear word.

I even heard you need to wear a thick jacket in there because of the serious coldness of the AC inside the entire structure!

Great work! Let this quality be replicated in the National stadium in Lagos

That’s where the real problem lies. We have very poor maintenance culture (aka “no be my own” culture) as a people, and that really needs to change.

Whoa! This is interesting. I thought that American musicians started coming to Nigeria for concerts in the 2000s. I know James Brown performed at Onikan stadium sometime in the 70s (cos my dad always used to tell me about the concert), but I never knew American musicians used to perform in naija in the 80s. Nice. Thanks for this info.

Exactly. There are still thousands of people that still enjoy that art form.

Apart from that sef, Nigerian youths always follow trends...all it takes is for their favourite celebs and influences to make going to see plays the next cool thing, and people would start going.

Oh, it would be beautiful. Especially in the main bowl that looks like something out of Hollywood and the Oscars. 🤩

What?

Omo, the 80s was the golden era of Black American R&B musicians storming Nigeria to perform. Don’t forget there was nothing like Afrobeats then.

In fact the only Nigerian artiste that youths tolerated in those days was Fela. Nobody else.

It was ALL about R&B, in the clubs, house parties, everywhere.

We were like African yankis in those days. That’s the same swag that led into Afrobeats etc..

I attended so many of those concerts at the national theatre.

Cool. I love reading and hearing about Nigeria's past. I know Afrobeats started winning the youth over around the mid 2000s...cos when I used to throw parties in the late 90s/early 2000s, you dare not play any Nigerian music. The Remedies Shakomo, even though it was popular in naija when it dropped, it was still looked at as razz music by majority of the youth party goers. grin

It was around them D Banj time, and then P Square time that afrobeats became cool to all youths.

Hopefully! But what we lack in Nigeria is 'Maintenance Culture" Our attitude towards looking after things is generally bad. A new bridge that was recently constructed at Mile2 has been invaded with traders(clothes and Fruit sellers alike). In no time will that place look like a "shit-hole". My question is; where were they displaying their goods beforehuh

bocin500:
Cool!

Hopefully, it will be maintained.
