OSSIEC, Abioye sue IGP, Osun CP for breach of fundamental rights

Demand N2bn damages

Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) and its chairman, Barr. Hashim Abioye have sued the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and the Osun State Commissioner of Police for the breach of fundamental rights.

In a suit filed by the commission, joined by Hashim Abioye, a sum of Two billion naira (N2Bn) had been demanded as damages for harassing, intimidating and detaining some ad-hoc staff of the commission for committing no offence.

Recall that the OSSIEC headquarters had been sealed off by the police a day before the Saturday, February 22, 2025 local government elections in the state which barred residents of the state to have access to the commission.

According to ... who spoke to our correspondent, said the commission is taking up the case against the Nigerian Police over the overzealousness of their men.

He noted, "A security agency is expected to be neutral and provide necessary security for the people of Nigeria, unfortunately, reverse is the case. Many of our ad-hoc staff have been arrested for committing no offence and up till now, no reason had been given by the police.

"The fact that APC rules at the federal who have control of the security agencies doesn't give the approval for the police to just misbehave anyhow. This is democracy

Good use of the judiciary.

The police committed acts of criminality. Was it the court thst asked the police to shut down OSIEC office and arrest its staff?

Barr Hashim Abioye, before he was Appointed by Governor Adeleke As The OSSIEC Chairman. He was part of the lawyer that was Defending PDP And their Local Government Chairmen and Councilors in the court of law, He's also a card carrying member of the PDP.

Aside from that, He's a candidate Of the PDP in 2018 House of Assembly Election in the state. In 2022, He was an aspirant who contested primary Election with Tajudeen Adeyemi in PDP.

So, if truly you're not an hypocrite, why do you have problem with Lateef Fagbemi being Oyetola's Lawyer in 2022 Election litigation and you see no problem with Barr Hashim Abioye as the OSSIEC Chairman in the state. Remember that, Tinubu is the president that appointed Prince Lateef Fagbemi and not Oyetola.
Mr. Hashim Abioye a big disgrace to the bar. Imagine declaring the winner without the votes cast. He’s just a big disgrace to the judiciary.
