Why Is Nafdac Levying Shop Owners In Idumota 2m Naira by ignatiusez(op): 7:33pm On Feb 26, 2025
Today, 25th February, NAFDAC sent a notice to all the shop owners in Idumota drug market requesting them to pay the sum of 2million naira for administrative charge. This is even when many shop owners were cleared of infractions. In asmuch as I commend NAFDAC for their passion and commitment toward eradicating fake and counterfeit products from the markets, I feel that 2million naira is outrageous considering the economic downturn in the country. Where do you expect them to pay such a huge amount of money especially when their shops have been under lock and key for 2weeks? And for many of them, no offending products were found in their shops. What is the 2million for please? I urge the authorities at NAFDAC to reconsider this huge sum of money been levied store owners in the interest of justice.

There is no mention of N2million in any of the two documents posted, this therefore means that the levy is likely being imposed by rogue staff of NAFDAC and is illegal undecided

Please read the 3rd paragraph in the second document from NAFDAC (addressed to the managing director) again. The sum of 2million was clearly written.

Yes I have seen it, I missed it the first time.

Does your company engage in the storage and sale of items meant for human consumption?

Did NAFDAC officials at any point within the recent past visit your business premises for an inspection?

I think there should be a letter or report sent to your business which details the offences or rules which your business broke and this should have been sent before even sending you a demand notice.

Another issue I have is with the description of the amount as an "Administrative charge", such a fee is a penalty or fine and should be described as such.

The penalty is usually not an arbitrary amount, I think most government agencies usually have a scale which details various offences and their penalties, the same way there is a list of traffic offences and the amount of penalty for each traffic offences.

The government is broke and desperate. They need money to defend the Naira and settle loans.

I don't have any shop or company in Idumota, just a concerned Nigerian who is totally against injustice and unfairness. You can see that they cunningly tagged the 2m naira as administrative charges! For what? Is it for someone you just issued a clean bill? I implore the NAFDAG DG to wade into this, and probably fish out those behind this shenaniganism.
