DenreleDave:Awolowo was in prison in Calabar in Eastern Nigeria and Ojukwu was in charge of Eastern Nigeria at the time and FGN was not in control of anything in that region. He could have refused to release him but he chose to release him, hoping that would endear him to the Yorubas after the several massacres of Igbos in the North and other places. |

Katakata10:Three million dead—not from military prowess, but from sheer cowardice. The Nigerian army, armed and bankrolled by the Soviet Union, Britain, and Egypt, still proved too weak, too incompetent, and too disgraceful to defeat a blockaded Biafra in actual combat. Instead of fighting like real soldiers, they took the path of cowards—starving women and children because that was the only way they could claim "victory." Nigeria is the biggest embarrassment of the modern world—a so-called military that, even with the might of global superpowers behind it, was still too useless to crush a ragtag, starving resistance. Full-grown men, backed by the world’s strongest armies, yet too inept to win without genocide. |

Summary: There was a coup in January 15th 1966. Some people rushed and tagged it 'Igbo coup'. The most senior officer of the time, General Ironsi, assumed power. Six months later, a far more bloody coup occured, Ironsi is killed. This time, nobody tags this coup a 'Northern coup'. Ojukwu insists that just like in the January 15th 1966 coup, the most senior officer of the time, Brigadier Ogundipe, should assume power. The coup plotters refuse and foist Gowon, who was junior to several officers, including Ojukwu In the weeks and months that followes, there is mass killings of Easterners, mainly Igbos, all over Nigeria, particularly in the North. Millions of Igbos head back the East in fear of their lives. Ojukwu is furious at Gowon for doing nothing as thousands of Igbos are killed. Many Eastern groups approach Ojukwu and ask him to declare the Eastern Region a seperate country in the face of genocide. Ojukwu refuses and opts to meet Gowon The Military President of Ghana, General Ankrah, hosts Gowon and Ojukwu in his Hilltop mansion in Aburi, Ghana. Ojukwu and Gowon negotiate for two days, reach an agreement, which both men signed in front of General Ankrah. One of the points of the agreement was that Gowon would not change the structural arrangement of Nigeria during the period of Military rule. When they return home, Gowon starts to deny the agreement, and completely breaks the agreement with Decree 14, which abolished all four Regions, and created 12 new states, changing the structural arrangement of Nigeria In retaliation, Ojukwu declares the Eastern Region as Republic of Biafra. Gowon declares war The rest is history |

Katakata10:But look at them today, the have thrived, they have rebuilt and repopulated their cities, they are flourishing in trade, business and education. Where is the northern region? Still backwards, they still struggle to get 5/400 in unity school examinations. What about the western region? The South East still stand shoulder to shoulder if you exclude Lagos state. We fought, we lost, but we lived again ![]() |

According to IBB, Ojukwu insisted that in the absence of Aguiyi-Ironsi, Brig Babafemi Ogundipe, who at that time was the most senior army officer, should be the head of state. This heightened the tension in the land......... The real problem of a typical Igbo person is insensitivity. Igbo people are always led by emotion rather than logic and sound, critical thinking! Ojukwu was stupid to have reasoned this way! A very bloody coup, which killed the most referred spiritual figure of the Islamic north - Ahmadu Bello - was led and carried out by officers and soldiers of southern extraction and yet,Mr Ojukwu insisted that another Southerner, though the most senior, should take over the mantle of leadership of the country in such tensed atmosphere! No wonder, the dearth of intelligent people in Alaigbo still persists even till today! Was it not the same insensitivity and stupidity of the highest order which made the wives of the Igbo army officers to be taunting their northern officers' wives counterparts with the killings of Ahmadu Bello and others?! Apart from the fact that Ironsi failed to prosecute the coup plotters, the majority of whom were his Igbo brothers, his government and his own life were brutally terminated primarily because he was a Southerner! The coup of Jan 15,1966 had already caused a serious mistrust not among the various ethnic nationalities in the country alone, but also among the officers of the armed forces! So, there was no way an officer of southern extraction could have successfully managed such a dicey situation - northern officers would not cooperate with him. That was exactly what happened when junior officers and soldiers refused to take order from their very senior Igbo officers - in Abeokuta and elsewhere! General IBB did not exactly exonerate the Ndigbo as far as the bloody coup of Jan 15,1966 is concerned, below are his exact words as recorded in his recently launched book: "It was heinously callous for Nzeogwu to have murdered Sir Ahmadu Bello and his wife, Hafsatu, because not only were they eminently adored by many but also because they were said not to have put up a fight. From that moment the putsch was infiltrated by "outsiders" to its supposed original intention and it took on an unmistakable ethnic coloration compounded by the fact that there were no related coup activities in the Eastern Region"- President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, 'A Journey In Service: An Autobiography', February 2025. |

This one just dey finger Igbos brain.. Maradona for a reason ![]() -Aburi accord was agreed -Ojukwu went against it by invading the Midwest(present day NigerDelta), trying to force them to join him. instead of just going with his Biafrans. Several people in Benin were slaughtered by Ojukwu's order. Why did Ojukwu do this? It's because his aim all along was to have control of the Oil rich region during a time of Oil boom. He never really wanted Biafra for Biafrans. -Gowon did the right thing by returning the "favour" to push Biafran soldiers back. Then came the war. -Gowon in his kind heartedness, (some can argue 'foolishness') was still sending food from the North to SE, thinking it was getting to the civilians and kids. -Gowon later released Awolowo and made him the Minister of Finance. That was the beginning of the end of the war because Awolowo did his investigation and discovered that the food Gowon kept sending was being cornered by the Biafran soldiers who kept getting fat while the civilians kept starving to death. - With the advise of Awolowo ,Gowon stopped sending food and within months Ojukwu -who had already sent his family to Ivory Coast before the war started, escaped like a coward to join them; Leaving the remaining Soldiers to keep fighting a lost battle and the civilians to keep starving to death. - It was worse because these civilians had already gone to deposit all their money in the bank to be replaced by Biafran currency- which wasnt a legal tender anywhere in the world, so they couldnt migrate or buy food from neighbouring countries. Ojukwu had used some of the money they deposited to secure arms and pocketed the rest. In simple terms, the real Biafran civilians were defrauded by Ojukwu who fuelled their "hate" to push his own agenda. - It had to be Phillip Effiong from Calabar-one of those whose community,Ojukwu had invaded in SS, that surrendered, if not the entire Igbo clan would have been erased all because they were foolish enough to follow a selfish millionaire soldier into a battle that he knew he can't win. - After the war, Awolowo was the one that still willingly gave every Biafran alive, young or old, 20 pounds because they had all foolishly given whatever cash they had to Ojukwu's fake bank for exchange to Biafran currency. Many of those that had their money saved in banks in Lagos,Kano etc were dead too because they were the first casualties of Gowon's retaliation after Ojukwu had invaded the MidWest. Today, the grandchildren of these civilian Biafrans that were deceived have been brainwashed to see the same Ojukwu that escaped to Ivory Coast as the hero. Meanwhile, even their fathers didnt vote for Ojukwu when he contested to be president of Nigeria in 2003 and 2007. They rather voted OBJ- the same guy that led the battalion that finally defeated Biafra after originally leading the Battalion to repel Ojukwu's boys in the Midwest, a year earlier. In fact we can say OBJ was the General that actually defeated Biafra. That shows that for them to still vote OBJ over OJukwu in an election, that means these Biafran parents know something about Ojukwu or were told something about him by their parents(grandparent) ,that they didnt tell their own offsprings. This same Ojukwu lost in 1983 when he wanted to become a Senator. His loss in 2007 Presidential election to Yar'adua and 4 others(as he came 6th) was the worst because he could only get about 156k votes. Even Aba alone had well over 156k adults.. so why didnt these SEners vote for their apparent "Hero" ? Uzor Kalu that came 4th in that election still had 600k votes -mostly from the same SE. That is at least 5x that of 'hero' Ojukwu. Think about it. There is something bad/toxic about Ojukwu that the SEners above 35yrs old dont want to reveal. Or maybe they actually see Ojukwu for the selfish fraudster and coward he truly was but won't openly admit it. Dont even get me started on Wole Soyinka who was among the few Nigerians that openly supported and protested for the Biafran CIVILIANS - even highjacking a radio station in the process. Today, their grandchildren are hating on him because he did not support Obi- the same Obi that they all saw as a failure when he was Governor. It's almost as if some Igbos just love deceiving themselves thinking it's to save face. |

FreeStuffsNG:Oga let hate leave your mind. Truth be told a lot of people are unintelligent and easily swayed by politicians. The Igbo coup narrative was a spin to promote tribal sentiments and get the north to a position of power. The coup plotters were wrong but look at some 1967 dynamics you’re blind to. In 1967 majority of army commissioned officers were southerners and Igbo. This was why the British started the northernizatoon policy to promote northerners officers rapidly so it’s fair to say if you pick officers randomly you would pick mostly southern officers. Majority of non commissioned officers were middle belters who were being oppressed by the Fulani’s. Ask yourself why they didn’t turn to shoot Nzeogw. Why didn’t they mutiny? Because they had their own grievances. Nigerians were largely disappointed with the political class having just become independent from British rule which seemed more organized to Nigerian politicians that were corrupt and disorganized. This was why the coup was popular at first before the Igbo coup rumors spread. All I have said does not justify the coup or make Igbo people innocent because they did gloat after the coup. Which I noticed that our Igbo brothers don’t know how to handle victory too well. That gloating played into the hands of the political dividers who called it Igbo coup and sought revenge. |
