Tribalism is a reality. National unity can be a reality; but at present it is not quite a reality. How this reality of tribalism can be adapted to the unreality of national unity to make it a reality is the problem which I will now proceed to exegete.

Azikiwe said that tribalism is a reality (as it's human nature) but Nigerians can use it to improve their country if they channel it in the right way.

In no way has he said that tribalism is good or that he, himself, is a tribalist. He's simply saying that if it's going to exist then we might as well use it in a way that will make us all (that is Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa) fine.

If anything, this reinforces the notion that he was a nationalist as he's only thinking of what's good for the country, not just his tribe.

And I don't think it's any coincidence that he made this speech after he was chased away from the Western Region by Awolowo and his supporters. There was only one tribalist between the two and it wasn't Zik.

Yeah, Awolowo was a tribalist for stopping Azikwe from being in charge of our political affairs (in the sw) but Zik - an igbo man was not consider, a tribalist for scheming to become premier of yorubaland. Why was an igbo man so desperate to rule yorubaland?

No one chased Zik away from the Sw rather he ran back to his ancestral land when it became obvious to him that, the yorubas will not give him the platform to rule over them. Whatever good he has in stock for yorubas, let him go and do it to his homeland.

He made the speech in 1964 and the incident you mentioned, occured in 1951. Where i ask, is the coincidence, you alluded to, in your post?[/s]

When you don't allow them to have their way, like Azikiwe want a full takeover of the SW by Igbos, then you are unreasonable. Till date, and as a show of their unreasonable and unfair nature, you will never see one Igbo condemn Shinedu for pouring so much hate and insults on the Yorubas he wants to lead as Lagos Governor when such is never done anywhere in the world.

Instead they revise reality to claim Yorubas rejected Shinedu because of his Igbo mother. Worthless troublemakers the lot of them. Don't allow them walk all over you, in effort to commandeer your land and asset, you become their worst enemy they feel duty-bound to insult, demonise and lie against daily.
