Tensions erupted in the White House on Friday, February 28, when the United States President, Donald Trump, and his Ukrainian counterpart, President Volodymyr Zelensky, engaged in a heated verbal clash over the future of Ukraine’s war with Russia.

The exchange grew even more confrontational when Trump criticised Zelensky’s attitude, accusing him of lacking gratitude.

The AFP quoted Trump as saying, "You're in no position to dictate what we're going to feel," rebuking Zelensky for not being "thankful."

He further warned that Ukraine risked "gambling with World War Three" and that continued U.S. support was contingent on Zelensky’s willingness to negotiate.

Vice President JD Vance, who was present, also took aim at Zelensky, calling him "disrespectful."

The Ukrainian leader attempted to respond but was cut off, as Trump doubled down on his stance that a peace deal was "fairly close" and that Ukraine should consider making a deal with Russia "or we’re out."

The meeting had begun with a seemingly cordial tone, with Zelensky expressing hope that Trump would be on Ukraine’s side.

“I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE,” Trump emphasised.

The former president also accused Zelenskyy of showing disrespect to the U.S. in “its cherished Oval Office,” though he did not specify what actions led to that characterisation.

“He can come back when he is ready for peace,” Trump concluded.
