Did people from the ancient Benin kingdom conquer Japan? Many Nigerians don't know that there is a period of Japanese history known as the EDO PERIOD, which lasted from 1603 to 1868. The Edo Period of Japan was noted for great progress in administration, architecture, and economic development. Numerous statues and paintings from the Edo Period show clearly African-looking people. Most interestingly, LINGUISTIC similarities have been unearthed between Edo, Igbo, Yoruba etc, with the Japanese language, including hundreds of human names shared. Does the Oba of Benin owe Nigerians an explanation on the Benin Kingdom's links with Japan? By the way, the former name of Tokyo is........Edo. More facts: Edo was a village that became the capital of Japan in 1603 when a military commander Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Tokugawa Shogunate. Edo grew into a huge city with a population of over a million by the mid-eighteenth century. The name was changed to Tokyo in 1868 when the Tokugawa Shogunate ended and the new emperor, Meiji, moved his residence there.. - The title of the Benin kingdom's top military commander was the IYASE. - A 'Shogunate' is a district managed by an 'Ogun officer' of the type that manned Benin's regions. The Japanese and the Edo people have a similar form of greeting which is Domo. Domo in Edo means 'Greetings'. Domo in Japanese is a way of greeting, and it can work as a 'thank you' in the Japanese world. |
