But for APC to use it to campaign is always sustainable. Useless leaders give only excuses for failure |

Every time the Reserve goes down, Nigerians scream that it is due to the CBN using dollars to subsidise the naira. That is not true. On a day to day basis, money comes into and leave the Reserve. That is how a Reserve operates. Do people even know that the government's foreign obligations are met from the Reserve, and that includes loans taken by previous governments. World Bank loans can be for 20 years or more. So Nigeria still has to be paying back loans taken as far back as Mr Obasanjo's , Jonathan and Buhari governments. These are being paid back from the Reserve. The recent purchase of 8000 tractors from Europe will have been paid for from the Reserve, like many other obligations. The balance in the Reserve will go up and down from day to day, week to week etc It is normal. When it goes down, it does not automatically mean the CBN used the money to support the naira! Ah, Nigerians. |

Lol....this is how to know the uneducated ones that are online jobbers with next to nothing upstairs and probably semi literates but happy to come to Nairaland to flex fake statistics while hoping that intelligent people dont pick up their lies. This dude below has been spewing fake statistics all strewn around nairaland but I chose to ignore, however today, i think it is time to call out his lies... Please read: Fact 1: CBN still remains the largest supplier of forex in Nigeria. In 2024, CBN supplied $11.4bn to the Nigerian economy, mostly from the foreign reserves and other capital importation sources, making 40% of all the forex inflow into Nigeria in the year. This can be verified on any website on Internet. The 3% this dude below mentioned is a bloody lie. He doesn't know anything near what he is referring to. In contrast, CBN in 2022 did not supply USD to the Nigerian market( which created huge scarcity of forex then)and supplied $6.9bn in 2021 according to World bank report(anyone can check this online). Fact 2: A major feature of an economy where the currency is floated is that the Government bank(Central Bank/Federal Reserve Bank/National Bank) is not a custodian of a huge chunk of foreign currency deposits. That is left to other intermediaries who trade in it. The government bank only intervenes to correct cyclical challenges using monetary instruments like interest rates. That the CBN holds majority of the forex in Nigeria and sometimes sells and participates directly by even selling below the supposed "market rate" is enough for any knowledgeable person to know that they are not floating anything......it is a managed exchange rate system...simple. That was why IMF called it " systemic devaluation" in their report of March 2024. These people in Tinubu's government dont know what they are doing....they are confused. DeLaRue: |

helinues:Well, had buhari done things like removing subsidy in 2015, and actually also removing subsides on power too, by now we would have been seeing light at the end of the tunnel Even your beloved tinubu is still doing the same thing pdp did. The oil era is over. Time for your government to sit up. |

DeLaRue:Don't mind the mischievous analyst. They know what they are doing. Majority of them were deriving a lot of profit from naira devaluation. The current CBN governor is getting it right with mild and accurate intervention. This current stability is a clear and quite a true reflection of the state of the naira. Rubbish propaganda. |

anonimi:PDP polices of massive subsides on everything is why we did not have light and why we had no working refineries , instead we got worsening refineries instead. And your atiku came and told us that we should bring back subsides. On top of the debt buhari left for us? Apc is shite, but pdp is responsible for a lot of the economic mess we have now. No, I am not a tinubu supporter. I call things as they are. |

DeLaRue:De La Rue, I want your enlightenment on how we've been able to attract dollar to the forex market without CBN contribution |
| Re: Why Exchange Rate Stability Is Not Sustainable - Experts by DeLaRue: 10:30am On Mar 05, 2025 |
Blazetrailer:You abuse and denigrate instead of addressing issues correctly . I don't know if your '$11 billion' for 2024 is right or wrong, but either way it doesn't conflict with my thesis since my reference point is '...from December to now...' meaning, in the last 3 months. So, even if your figure for the whole of 2024 is correct, how does that conflict with my own assertion. Is it not possible that none of your $11 billion figure applies to December 2024 where my reference period starts? Please provide your own data for December 2024 to now, let's see if I am right or wrong. Economics is about trends. And the trend since December 2024 till now is that the net contribution of the CBN to the forex market has reduced dramatically to just 3%. A massive reduction from about 65% under the previous government. Fact. |

The thing is, we have had this issue since independence...forex is not enough...so exchange rate is not sustainable. But because we are import dependent, government has been using subsides, and is still doing it low key, to keep the naira from reaching N2000 and above per dollar. They are scared. Until we do more domestic manufacturing, forget about strong naira. Manufactured goods and services is the way. |
