An Islamic cleric, Abdulraman Bello, yesterday told the Kwara State Magistrates’ Court how he murdered and disemebered a female student of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, Yetunde Hasfoh Lawal.

The deceased and cleric were said to be Facebook friends.

Abdulraman said this during his arraignment with four others. He therefore pleaded for the release of those who were arraigned with him, claiming they did not commit any offence as alleged by police. Earlier, the state Ministry of Justice announced its intention to take over the case.

Counsel from the ministry, Issa Zakare, informed the court that the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) was out, adding that the defendant (Bello) had a case to answer following his subsequent proper arraignment at a state High Court.

The counsel to the family of the deceased, Dr. Folorunso Ahmad Hussein, did not oppose the ministry’s application but pleaded for justice for the murdered girl and family.

Presiding Magistrate Sanusi Muhammad told the suspect to make such a request when he gets to the High Court.

He, then adjourned the case to March 20 for mention.

Speaking with reporters after the sitting, Hussein said the state ministry had sent a principal counsel to take over the case from the police prosecutor, adding that the application was granted.

“The counsel informed the court that DPP’s advice had been released and proper charges preferred at the High Court and filed while parties were served on Thursday morning with the charges at the High Court,’’ he added.
