Abia State government has directed that History and Igbo language be made compulsory in the state secondary schools with immediate effect.

The government has also shut down the online portal through which interested teachers were asked to apply for employment following the expiration of application deadline.

Of the 29,797 applications received during the period, 9,371 were shortlisted for the next selection process, where 5,000 successful ones will eventually be employed.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, who disclosed this to reporters said 5,000 teachers are to be employed following the astronomical increase in public school enrolment.

Kanu said with the reintroduction of history, a new curriculum would be developed for it, while Igbo language is now compulsory for primary to senior secondary pupils to make them grounded in their mother tongue.

Kudos to the language initiative.

Only issue with this is that the Igbos don't really have any history aside the book written by Thomas Basden and the sojourn of Samuel Ajayi Crowther into the region.

It's funny how ill-informed folks like you make most noise. Do you know anything about Igbo?

Pick up two books.
1. Thomas Basden - Among the ibos of Nigeria.
2. The peoples of Southern Nigeria: a sketch of their history, ethnology and languages with an abstract of the 1921 census by Percy Amaury Talbot
3. The Economists - 1968” Vol 228

It's fantastic that the necessary steps are being taken! However, it's a bit puzzling why it took so long for this issue to be addressed. As I mentioned in other threads, the problem of Igbo children in the East struggling with their native language is quite prevalent. In fact, studies have shown that about 50% of Igbo children do not speak the language fluently. The Ohaneze Ndigbo worldwide organization has also raised concerns about the lack of proficiency in Igbo among young Igbo children. It's crucial to prioritize the preservation and promotion of the Igbo language to prevent it from becoming endangered.

Peace!

But when LASG made Yoruba language a mandatory subject to be taught up till secondary school level, a bunch of meddlesome Ibo hags in far away Owerri came out to condemn the state.

Ibo people ehn!

They want you to lose your cultural heritage and become a soulless woke liberal whiile they guard theirs jealously .

They know that individual nationalistic pride by other tribes is the greatest hinderajce to their expansionism into other people's land.

Lagos started it. I know this kind of thing will spread across the country. Well, if that's what Nigerians want, so be it.
