Syria is way too close to Isreal, has a long border with Isreal and is huge enough to provide a comfortable base for those baying for Isreals annihilation. The leadership in Telaviv will never allow such threats to exist so close..., which makes sense in realpolitik. The problem is that when you introduce these sorts of scorched earth policies to annihilate societies desperate to annihilate you, you either have to go the full hug (which will obviously mean a genocide and so unacceptable), or live with the realisation that sometimes in the future, the survivors of these carnage, will ultimately come back for their own pound of flesh. That means endless and endless cycle of violence. And that is the middle east as we know it..
