NASS: The Nauseating Akpabio/akpoti Mess - Punch Editorial by Bobloco(op): 6:25am On Mar 09, 2025
IT is extremely worrisome that some harebrained characters at the National Assembly have become accustomed to scandals and profligate lifestyles. Nothing seems to bother the degenerate lawmakers except when their selfish interests are breached. That is why they appear to have more time for frivolities than the reason for which they were elected.

Currently, the major thing on their table is not governance but the sexual harassment allegations against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, by the lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The face-off escalated Thursday when the Senate punished the Senate President’s accuser with a six-month suspension. During the suspension, she will not have her salary and security aides. She must not step into her office or be seen within the precincts of the NASS. This is high-handed and one-sided. The Senate is a parliament, not a court of law. Akpabio cannot be a judge in his case; that is unjust. That means Akpoti-Uduaghan’s constituents will not be represented for six months.

It is concerning that every time a lawmaker makes an allegation in the NASS, the standard practice is to punish the lawmaker concerned heavily.

The current rift blew open when Akpabio changed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sitting position during plenary on February 20, 2025. This did not go down well with Akpoti-Uduaghan, who protested the change and accused Akpabio of abusing his office and obstructing her legislative duties.

Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio’s wife, Unoma, have gone to court to sort themselves out. Mrs Akpabio, who described her husband as a disciplined man who respects women, seeks, among other things, N250bn in compensation and a perpetual injunction to stop Akpoti-Uduaghan from making further damaging claims.

On her part. Akpoti-Uduaghan had earlier slammed a N100bn lawsuit against Akpabio and his senior legislative aide, Mfon Patrick, who had published a post on his Facebook page accusing the woman of thinking that being a senator was all about wearing make-up and transparent outfits to the chamber.

Coincidentally, the former acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Joy Nunieh, had similarly accused Akpabio of sexual harassment in 2020. The Senate President, who was the then Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, denied the allegation. He has also rejected the present accusation.

As the Senate continues to dance naked over the Akpabio/Akpoti-Uduaghan feud, the question remains, what are the values of Nigerian lawmakers? How have they contributed to improving the quality of life of Nigerians?

The current 10th NASS may have passed some bills since its inauguration in June 2023, but the major sensitive ones remain pending. They include the Tax Reform Bills, Constitution Reform Bills, and the Electoral Act Bill. Also pending is the National Ranches Commission Bill which aims to establish ranches for herders within their states of origin, and mandates that all cattle movements be carried out by vehicular means only.

Rather than focus squarely on their legislative duties, the Akpabio-led leadership of the NASS has turned the hallowed red chamber into a house of comedy and ostentation.

Fresh media reports indicate that the Senate President and Tajudeen Abass, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, travel in an 11-vehicle convoy each.

These vehicles reportedly include two bulletproof 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models valued at N306m per unit, five Toyota Land Cruisers valued at N375m, two Toyota Hilux, one Hilux, one ambulance and three police power bikes. The Speaker reportedly has the same number of vehicles in his convoy.

In a country described as the global poverty capital, this is utterly senseless.

The Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, also allegedly move around in a convoy of nine-vehicle fleets. The vehicle fleets of Akpabio and Abass and those of their deputies reportedly cost over N7bn.

This is outside the N57.6bn cost of procuring SUVs for lawmakers in 2023. This profligacy is insensitive, and a violation of the constitution.

These shenanigans did not start with the 10th NASS. In 2013, The Economist of London described the lawmakers as the highest-paid in the world. By GDP, Nigeria ranked sixth in Africa and 41st in the world in 2023. So, it is financially illogical to remunerate lawmakers so handsomely.

In 2018, former Senator Shehu Sani revealed that each senator earned a monthly running cost of N13.5m in addition to the N750,000 the RMAFC prescribed per month. The senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Kawu Sumaila, said last year that though his monthly salary was less than N1m, a Nigerian senator receives N21m as running costs monthly.

Meanwhile, millions of Nigerians do not know where their next meal will come from. At least 67 citizens were trampled to death while scrambling for food palliatives in some parts of the country late last year.

Experts estimate that about 40 per cent of Nigerian children under five suffer from stunted growth, 8.0 per cent are wasted annually and 27 per cent are underweight. In 2020, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria and Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, said Nigeria recorded the highest number of stunted children in Africa and that malnutrition accounted for 53 per cent of deaths among children.

The minimum wage was increased from N30,000 to N70,000 in 2024. Many state governments have yet to pay it. The N77,000 promised to the National Youth Service Corps members is yet to be paid months after it was approved in July. To compound the situation, kidnappers have made life unbearable for many Nigerians.

The senators do not seem to bother about these critical issues, including education and health, because they are not their priorities. What bothers them the most is what goes into their pockets.

Oftentimes, they allegedly demand bribes either to carry out their oversight functions or to approve some ministerial nominations.

Sometimes, they mutilate or pad the federal budget to accommodate their selfish interests. Last year, Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, alleged that the 2024 budget was padded to the tune of N3.7tn.

The Senate leadership denied the allegation and suspended Ningi despite the observation by a civic no-profit organisation, BudgIT, that there was no detailed allocation for the N3.7tn in the 2024 budget.

This is not how the legislature in advanced democracies operates. In the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister cannot misbehave because the lawmakers are there to check his excesses.

In 2013, the UK’s Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority planned to raise MPs’ pay. The lawmakers themselves vowed to fight the plan.

In the United States, Congress impeached Donald Trump twice during his first tenure as President. It happened to be the largest bipartisan impeachment vote in US history.

Nigeria’s liberation day will come when citizens rise and insist on reform of the political system, including reducing the bloated legislature.

There is no justification for keeping many of the lawmakers. Most contribute little to quality debates and other issues in the chambers.

There is only one House of Assembly at the state level. This can be replicated at the federal level.

Some concerned Nigerians have suggested that lawmaking should be made a part-time business.

The salaries and allowances of lawmakers should be reduced. This will help to reduce the cost of governance.

One reason for the debauchery at the highest level of governance in Nigeria is that the characters in the parliament have too much access to cash. It is against anything that is sensible and must stop.

The Senate has said she was suspended not because of the sexual allegations but Nigerians insist it's because of the allegation. Some people will only believe what they want to believe anyways

Natasha has unfortunately cried wolf one too many times which is not helping her case.

That said, the SP has, directly and indirectly, made disparaging remarks about Natasha that indicate some level of conflict between them.

The SP should have allowed Natasha make her speech, then correct her observations and actions accordingly.

Natasha must prove her allegations in court.

You can't just tarnish the image of someone without a evidence.

He who alleges must provide evidence.

It could be you tomorrow. Just pray you don't become a victim of blackmail someday.

Kogi has been cursed with very useless people representing and governing them

Just look at the people always representing them…. All very senselsss people

Natasha really is Satan spelled backwards, the queen of lies, confusion and manipulations

If you watch Reno’s video and you still take this Satan incarnate called Natasha in high regards, then you need brain surgery.

Keep supporting bad things, you think sexual allegation is a joke… several men have had their lives completely ruined due to this allegations that many ended up being false. That’s really unfair!

Very much on point

APC keeps breaking new lows in governance

Now it's sexual scandals they're defending and normalising

The suspension was used to summarily used to kill the petition of sexual harassment

How will Senator Natasha make her case when she can't go to the NASS

The most laughable part of the suspension is where the senate barred her from presenting herself as a Senator both locally and internationally. Is the senate aware that you can't summarily remove an elected official except as prescribed by the constitution?

Re: NASS: The Nauseating Akpabio/akpoti Mess - Punch Editorial by Image123(m):
Natasha was suspended for her inappropriate behavior in the Senate chambers on February 25, not for her petition against the senate president on March 6. The petition is with the senate ethics committee, with video and documentary evidence. Natasha's allegations are with zero evidence with two witnesses/alibis already denying it as false and ridiculous. Natasha refused to appear before the Senate ethics committee before her suspension. How anyone manages to believe a woman that adjusts her dress every 30seconds is beyond me in this case.

Copied

Because you lost out in the GAME, you want the country to burn baah, you want to bring down a whole institution shey?

You were given a committee that even RANKING SENATORS were not opportuned to chair and you were all happy and smiles, no form of s3xual allegation whatsoever, but immediately you were removed from the committee, which is a normal exercise in the National Assembly (reshuffling of committees), you now remembered your old tactics and want to use gender to blackmail your way. No na, the rules are the rules, your emotional cards can’t change it

We understand that you over padded the budget of that committee and wanted to challenge your state Governor in the next gubernatorial elections, but ‘garagara’ can’t win you this, you must know how to apply emotional intelligence

On national TV, you were seen shouting on top of your voice, causing nuisance because you were asked to sit in another seat in the same chamber, you let hell loose, you didn’t care about the House rules as you broke all available to you.

You ‘arranged’ for Human Rights radio station to interview you and as usual you were inconsistent in your submission, then, you went to another interview on TV to accuse the SP on harassing you s3xually, without evidence. This is your stock in trade tho as we have seen cases like this before

You said the SP harassed you and always remove your name from international trips, and still you were seen laughing and taking self with him on an international trip later. You can see that your stories don’t add up baah

Your fellow women in the chamber have come out to caution and deny you via the accusations, yet, you feel you are above the law, you sued the senate and refused to appear before an investigative committee

Have you asked yourself why none of your colleagues who you have served with for about a year now is supporting you on this, it is because this road you are riding on will lead you to nothing but d3struction

A fellow senator from your state even BEGGED you to restrain your steps and allow peace to prevail, he even promised to lead and guide you, but no, you even became more furious

You are allowing yourself to be used by the enemies of this administration, this 10th senate leadership to cause mayhem in the country

No matter the level of protest and counter protest you sponsor, just know that the law is no respecter of anyone.

This article is flawed/ biased

he face-off escalated Thursday when the Senate punished the Senate President’s accuser with a six-month suspension. The result for the suspension is not the accusation. So this statement is flawed

"It is concerning that every time a lawmaker makes an allegation in the NASS, the standard practice is to punish the lawmaker concerned heavily."

Lawmaker abused Senate rules, then ran to media station to scream victim instead of submitting a petition before that.

Seriously.

Imagine your Father as the Manager of a Company.
The company employed one Beautiful 24yrs Old Girl.
3months later, the Girl pasted your Father's Picture on SM that He is sexually harassing Her.

Unfortunately, she has never provided any evidence but crying crocodile tears on SM.

NB: Senate didn't suspend Akpoti becos of the allegations but because she broke Senate rules.
She should present her evidences in Court and sue for damages.
Not destroying someone's else career without proving her allegations.
Re: NASS: The Nauseating Akpabio/akpoti Mess - Punch Editorial by Asonaijaaso: 2:39pm On Mar 09, 2025
There’s no dancing around it—Akpabio is hiding something. If his hands were clean, he’d have immediately faced the Senate Ethics Committee with confidence—not fear.

Let’s not forget: he himself handpicked that same committee. So, why the paranoia? Why the desperate power play?

Senator Natasha Akpoti made public accusations. If they were false, Akpabio should have dragged her to court for defamation. But he hasn’t. Why? Maybe because her claims cut too close to the truth.

Rather than face scrutiny, he suspended her for 6 months—a calculated political punishment disguised as concern for “decorum.” But that’s not decorum. That’s political silencing. That’s 12.5% of her term—a deliberate effort to deprive Kogi Central of representation in the Senate.

All this over seating arrangements? Please. This reeks of fear—fear that screenshots, flirtatious texts, or even videos may emerge and explode in the public square.

Bottom line: you don’t suppress what you’re not afraid will surface.

Akpabio isn’t just avoiding the truth—he’s running from it.

Plenty words in red bold fonts and you still didn't make any sense.

Don't worry, you will be wrongly accused one day and people on social media will declare you guilty without evidence.

Just known that Karma is real. Lets learn to separate Politics from life issues.

If Aisha Yesufu accuse Peter Obi of sexual harassment tomorrow, I am sure you won't declare him guilty on the spot.

Natasha has gone to court, let the courts handle it and stop this campaign of calumny.

The question is: the sexual allegations were contained in her petition to the senate committee on ethics and privileges. Why did they ignore to treat that and did not call Akpabio in for questioning?

“You know I am the Senate President; I will give you whatever you want, all you have to do is make me happy”

“Senator Natasha, you can enjoy a whole lot if you take care of me and make me happy”

I can't vouch that Akpabio never said any of these. Even he, Akpabio has not come out to categorically deny saying any of those statements.

He only said he has not Sexually Harrased any woman, which may be true because such statements may not be considered as Sexual Harassment in this part of the world.

Our national assembly is run like a cult full of degenerate souls like the article pointed out. All the allegations made of bribery to pass budget allocation has been swept under the carpet. When the head is rotten nothing good can come out of the. Body.
Why is it that these kind of allegations follow that man everywhere he goes? He is like a man with unclean poop stock to his body and the flies are following him everywhere. A pity we have such a degenerate soul leading our supposed lawmakers.
