In 1917, the communists removed the regime of the Tsar. The elements loyal to the former Tsar fought back until 1921-22. It was a brutal war.

People don't like being on the wrong side of power. The reason why Samuel Doe of Liberia's tribe was not exterminated was because at the end of the day, that's why there were peacekeepers.

That is why democracy is better. At the end, you always know you can get some power. Dictatorships...once you lose out, its kill or be killed.

Right now, in the DR Congo, there are remnants of the old Rwandan pre-1994 army fighting back against Kagame's government. Exactly the same thing happening in Syria, only replace Alawites with Hutu, and Sunni muslims with tutsi.

Assad should have left only to a transitional government backed militarily by the west or key stake holders not rebels and terrorist.

That is how to create sanity and proper transition. Iraq is fairly stable cos of this mode of transition of power.
