Just Because One Is Above A Certain Age He Won't Be Employed In Nigeria? by guobe(op): 7:03am On Mar 11, 2025
Just woke up this morning to see WhatsApp messages of an acquaintance that he is fed up and don't know what to do again as the school he is working has not paid him for months now and he decided to try out another job and went for interview and he did very well but they are telling him that he is above a certain age and he won't get the job.
Above 50 years old Nigerians are going abroad and given jobs with no age discrimination.
You will hear in the news that no more age discrimination by National assembly law makers but it won't be implemented as the Federal Government will even advertise for job vacancies and put a certain age to apply.
Do they want people to die because they are nolonger young.
Why will people not have suicidal thoughts in Nigeria or think of going into crime when there are no financial nets to assist them to cushion their stress.
Quite pathetic.

Different business with different criteria.

Nobody wants obsolete people in their business

If you run your own business, you can employ 10 years old people

They will rather want obsolete people as judges?
Nobody is obsolete and if you are good for the job it should be given to you.

Everyone can't be good for the job. That's logical

Those who put different criterias have their target

In shape contrast, people of all ages and even people with disabilities are gainfully employed here in England.

I even know blind and visually impaired people who go to work using canes as they walk, gainfully employed.

Retirees are even begged to return to work, with many opting for part-time jobs.

But in Nigeria, job adverts have age restrictions. That will be considered discriminatory here.

That is how a sane environment should be .
My cousin is in UK and he got a job immediately he got there without the hullabaloo of his age.

It's so unfortunate that Nigeria keeps employing and recycling old men in key positions (political , judicial, security, etc and these old people keep preventing fresh minds from attaining positions of responsibility undecided undecided undecided undecided

It's not really the age, in Nigeria it's who you know...who recommended you...who brought you

Do you know the meaning of obsolete? Saying a human is obsolete is being too harsh on your part.

describing people as obsolete is offensive and insulting, but of course, we are talking about hellanus here, so no surprises.

That being said, objects and technology can be described with the word, not humans...

you are a very uncouth and despicable human being to describe humans as obsolete.

learn, get a job and get a meaningful life

If you ever get turned down for a job because of age in the UK, you can sue the company, it's just free money for you and many lawyers would be happy to take a case like that.

It is only in 9ja that everything is upside down. To even get called for interview, you go need connect.

When you move out of Nigeria, everything about 9ja go just dey vex you.

All we know is money money, no regard for rule of law. That's why an employer can decide to owe you months of wages and no consequences.

I never hear people striking becuase of unpaid wages or salary in the UK, the strike is always about better pay or better working environment and conditions.
Every Thursday, your money is already waiting in your account, or every last Wednesday of the month, if you earn monthly.

Let me stop here because this post just triggered me.

Some persons will believe you are lying but you no even talk the truth finish.

Nigerian companies hire and fire at will but UK companies provide you alternative employment if you don’t meet the mark of your current role or they are relieving you due to a downsizing.

No need sef to talk this matter.

My only prayer point is never to live in Nigeria and indeed Africa again. Living in Nigeria was my over 30 years not well spent.

Praying to only visit after my first 10years for just 2 weeks to let my kids visit their parents homeland as a vacation.

They believe those living abroad are depressed but countless millions of Nigerians living in the country are beyond depression but we can keep lying to ourselves.

Some of these roles are capped at 25. NNPC and seplat just finished graduate trainee employment. I'm sure you're older than the maximum age. You're also obsolete. Supporting rubbish.

How many people get 30 million for account now.
Coat if travelling abroad is so expensive now and it was done on purpose to frustrate Nigerians from travelling out.

Very true, UK have set school fees that in some cases are 4 times what locals pay. The discrimination is too much. The country is worth it though.
