From the picture, Abacha's rank isn't clear but it appears like an Eagle and a star, which is the rank of a liuetenant colonel. Also, he was not wearing red neck. But Diya was clearly a brig gen, with his red neck very conspicuous. Lastly, in the military, the senior ones are always at the front in any gathering. All these indicate Diya was superior to Abacha.

But how come Abacha became head of state and Diya was his superior agreed to be in Abacha cabinet and taking orders from him?

If you watch oputa panel videos on the Gen Diya's coup one of the statements Gen Adisa made was that Diya is as senior to all of them (the plotters) based on the year he entered the NDA. But he wasn't senior to Abacha.

Also Abach was the chief of Army staff during Gen Buhari's administration. And Abacha was the only person then who completed all the ranks as a Commissioned officer from 2nd lieutenant to General without skipping any rank.

When IBB took over, Abacha became a Lieutenant General and assumed the position of joint chief of staff.

That rank you're seeing is the crossed sword, torch and the eagle. (if you look at Buhari you'd notice that he has the same rank as abacha) The rank of a major general. Diya's rank is an eagle with 3 stars the rank of a brigadier general.

Abacha out ranked him. That's why he summoned him (Diya) to plot the over throw of shoneka.

What an irony! This same Diya would later conspire to assassinate Abacha in a failed coup. Diya would later be seen in a video clip sobbing and begging for forgiveness before Abacha, who handed the pitiable yoruba general an hanky to wipe away his tears. Abacha, being a humane leader, God bless him, spared Diya from the usual inevitable execution for coup plotters. Contrast this with Babangida who had his best friend General Mamman Vatsa executed in what's now regarded as a spurious allegation against Vatsa. Even the then No.3 general in the Babangida regime, the late plateau state-born General Donkat Bali, would later admit that Vatsa was executed unjustly as there was no evidence linking him with the coup. Babangida had 27 officers executed at a time. Vatsa is gone, but the villain who had him killed is now in a near vegetative state and will inevitably join Vatsa yonder for God's judgment.
