GOC Position is designated to Major Generals (2 Star Generals).

It is the norm now but in the past it wasn’t uncommon to have a colonel or brigadier as GOC.

Abacha was GOC 2nd mech Ibadan as a brigadier general. Murtala was GOC as a colonel.

Of the six GOC 1st div kaduna from formation till 1979, only Akinrinade was a major General. 1 was a colonial and 4 were Brigadiers.

Obasanjo and Adekunle were GOC 3rd div as colonels.

As with most government positions then, we were a growing country and not enough qualified personnel so the few who were qualified rose faster. The spate of coups and turnover of personnel didn’t help either.

Abacha was a Lt-Col in 1972, Major-General in 1983 & General in 1990.

Diya was a Lt col while serving in Ogun state. on the other hand, Abacha was a commanding officer at Oyo state , and a Col and Buhari himself was a major general and head of state

Diya was standing at the front simply because he was the host ,the state military governor

kindly run a check on the ranks that head a state doing the military era as they are all Lt Col and occasionally Col.


Back then, Abacha used to come down to Abeokuta and meet Diya been the ministry governor , they enjoy life to fullest At Ibara Housing estate.
