Mahmood is INEC staff pending the expiration of his tenure. Mrs. Oti is not INEC staff. She and others VCs were appointed returning officers just 2023 elections.

I referenced the AIT issue when I recently wrote about the death of the former Immigrations boss, David Paradang. Some might have forgotten what the AIT issue was about, so here's a reminder.

Something happened during a Euro 2020 match yesterday night and it illustrates the point that I have been making for a long time.


A player collapsed during the game and paramedics battled to keep him alive. Several things happened while the paramedics were battling to resuscitate him.

1) His teammates formed a ring around him to prevent people from taking pictures of him in that state. Basically, they protected his privacy.


2) The TV producer eventually panned away from him for the same reason. In fact, some people on Twitter are criticising the BBC for not cutting away from the feed sooner. They said that they should have returned to the studio.

3) Twitter temporarily made it difficult to search for Erikson and video clips of the incident.


What am I getting at?

A Bellview plane crashed in 2005 and AIT found the crash site in the village of Lisa. They broadcast close up shots of the wreckage and you could see the passengers' belongings. The NBC rightly sanctioned AIT for that broadcast, but Nigerians complained and accused the government of trying to hide something. All kinds of conspiracy theories were flying around and this forced President Obasanjo to order the NBC to reverse the sanction.

Of course the NBC was right. It is the norm (and it's even in the NBC regulations) that the identities of people who have been involved in a fatal disaster are not released until certain procedures are carried out. The next of kin of the deceased need to be informed before their identities are made public. This is because you might need to have a psychologist, a clergyman, a medical doctor or similar people around before certain people can be informed of the death of their loved ones. Otherwise you might have a case where someone sees the body of his deceased relative on TV and he then collapses and dies.

Channels TV have often covered similar things even before that Bellview crash, but they were not sanctioned because they were professional about it. They either took long shots or they blurred part of the picture.

But in Nigeria, everybody wants you to show close up shots of everything otherwise they will accuse you of covering things up and they will circulate all kinds of crazy conspiracy theories. More
