Throwback To Past State Of Emergencies Declared In Nigeria by chopnaira(op): 8:05pm On Mar 18, 2025
In 2004, after hundreds of people were killed in communal clashes in Plateau State, President Olusegun Obasanjo suspended Governor Joshua Dariye and declared a state of emergency.

Two years later, he did the same in Ekiti, suspending Governor Ayo Fayose.

In 2013: President Jonathan declared state of emergency in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe state

I've always maintained here that Tinubu keeps advising Fubara to sort out the issues in his state without mentioning Wike to suggest that Fubara is the bad person because he wants Wike to repeat in 2027 with Rivers State election results what he did for him in 2023. The plans are gradually unfolding.

I only pity people who will be the puns (victims) of this political power play because the coming days will be bloody.

The Executive and Legislative of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states weren't suspended.

So it's a different thing.

People are crying rivers of tears but I hold no sympathy for any criminal politician. When he was dinning with Wike and swimming his way to power through irregularities and illegality, he was smiling, but now table has turned, let him face what he brought upon himself, honour your deal with Wike, give Caesar what belongs to Caesar

I understood the topic.

You failed to state, that in 2013, the Governors and their HoA members weren't suspended unlike what just happened in Rivers State.

Trying hard to normalize this evil deed by Tibubu?
How many threads now about "past states of emergencies"? It is as if we have to accept the events in Rivers state, because we accepted similar events before! Where are the correlations? Or are we going to accept this infamy just simply because state of emergencies were declared in the past?

I mean in all past declarations of state of emergencies there were obvious facts of insurgencies and near break down of law and order. Even when Jonathan did so in the north, he allowed the opposition governors to stay, inspite of the fact that there were genuine security reasons to remove them. Why did Tinubu remove Fubara!?

Because Fubara refused to allow Wike dance skelewu on Rivers state purse as he has always done since he was a local government chairman? So if there is a shouting match at any state governors house, the president can declare a state of emergency and remove everyone. Is Tibubu now the new Abacha?

why didnt he cut same deal he did with Wike with Fubara to have his wuruwuru votes in 2027. He is afraid of a Wike that spineless beyond Rivers state. If he could dump El Rufai, why not Wike?

...or maybe El Rufai was never really dumped but strategucally used to derail a strong 2027 alliance against him.

There is provisions for state of emergency enshrined in section 305 of our constitution.
But the president does not have the power to collapse the entire democratic structure of the state.
What happened in Rivers State is a coup.
You cannot stop the function of the house of assembly.
When Goodluck Jonathan declared state of emergency in some northern states, the governor's were not removed.

Let’s be honest with ourselves—if Nigeria were in a state of chaos and severe crisis, would the president step down and appoint a sole administrator?

Jonathan declared partial state of emergency in the three Northern states. Shetima and his colleagues were still governors sabotaging Jonathan efforts to end d insurgency at d time

If Jonathan had dealt with these people trying to grab power tru terrorism and herdsmen attacks, we won't be experiencing this disastrous APC regime today.

People that were glorifying terror attacks to blackmail Jonathan eg El Rufai ,Lai Muhammad, Tinubu etc they were even worse in governance.
Shame on APC

Re: Throwback To Past State Of Emergencies Declared In Nigeria by kayowalemi(m): 8:55am On Mar 19, 2025
The state of emergency in 1999 constitution doesn't empower president to remove elected governor or House of Assembly. It only empower him to declare emergency rule with federal security outfit maintaining law and order in that state while governor is still carrying out his civic duty, most especially when the governor requested the emergency rule.

Goodluck declared a state of emergency in 3 northern states without vacating the governors because of insurgency. But that law that remove governor is in 1963 construction (not 1973). It has been removed in 1999 constitution. Read that emergency rule again.
