| Tomatoes Nursery Issue by Babyface33(op): 9:35pm On Mar 19, 2025 |
Dear fellow farmers, Please help me analyze my tomato nursery. It is currently 6 weeks and 5 days old and has already started flowering. My farm supervisor suggests that we abandon it, claiming it won’t produce well and that investing further in transplanting would be a waste of money. The delay in transplanting was caused by a delay in borehole drilling by the company. Now, I am confused about whether to proceed with transplanting or not. I would appreciate your suggestions and advice. Thank you!

Babyface33:Please transplant them and don't be scared of going on with this venture. Is the borehole ready now? If yes, go on and transplant. Some of the tomato will survive and give you some yield while some will give low yield or die off. Don't give up yet. Cheers. |

Babyface33:To best of my knowledge, you can still transplant them and they would adjust properly. me don uproot over somewhat tall tomato plants around table where Hausa man sells tomato along the road. Carried them home and transplanted the next day yet over 95% of them grew very well and yielded lots of tomatoes despite the pro longed dry season, and my lack of enough knowledge then. Out of about 15 or 16 tomato plants, about 10 survived. |

Babyface33:Which kind Farm Supervisor una dey get sef ? Any small thing, una don rush get Supervisor and/ or manager. Now your farm Supervisor is not Supervising again. Ain't He supposed to direct you when necessary. So if borehole no dey, una no fit use JerryCan go fetch water take water the young plants. Who even starts such project without having basic plans in place. my kinda person can't even afford to farm a 1-plot capacity farm without a regular source of water in place. Me no sabi too rely on God Ooo |

Babyface33:Just ensure to reduce stress by transplanting in the evening by first wetting the field before transplanting. Also reduce disturbance to the fragile roots by ensuring you don't allow them cut unnecessarily. Wet immediately after transplanting in the evening and also in the morning before the Sun comes out. Since they are densely packed, dig them out in groups to avoid damaging their roots too much. Have a bowl of water where you rise out the roots from the soil so they separate individually with Very little to No damage to their roots. Then you plant them. |

Every crop has critical stages that needs to be properly managed for optimum yield. Some crops can forgive certain management mistakes while others are very vengeful and will deal with you (low production) if you make similar mistakes. Like cucumber, tomato is less forgiving and will not fail to register its displeasure if not properly managed. I hate to say this, your manager may be right. Leaving the tomato seedlings up to 6 weeks in the nursery with accompanied moisture stress will impact on the overall performance. If you can afford it, nurse a new batch of seeds for half of your farm with seed trays to be transplanted in 3weeks. Also go ahead with transplanting those seedlings that are yet to flower in the other half space. This way, you'll reduce risk of total loss if the older seedlings fail to give good performance. |

Babyface33:They are too close , quickly remove some to create space and easy productions , you can also translplant the removed ones ...thank me later ...u are a newbie ... Next time , if you are transplanting at the onset, its very easy to create space for photosynthesis and production...but if u planted seed , once it grows like 2 - 3weeks , starts creating space for production. , tomatoes spread alots , even pepper , without that space there would be very little production, that's what is affecting yours...always supply them water too , very necessary |

Abandon it, whatever it will yield won't worth the stress |
| Re: Tomatoes Nursery Issue by E2000: 3:45pm On Mar 24, 2025 |
Since it's producing flower it means it's ready yo produced fruit. During transplanting some of those flowers will fall off or the tomato will be in distress temporarily and that will affect those flowers. So ultimately it's a gamble now that's why you manager is barking out. Gambles are dangerous |

Transplant them. If you do not, you have 100% certainty that they won't do well because of the way they are clustering. But if you transplant them, you have 50% possibility that they will do well. If I were you, I would go for fifty percent chance |

Transplant the healthy ones of the same height and pinch off the flowers. They will do well with water and cured chicken manure. |
