Lagos-based food delivery company, Chowdeck, has made a drastic shift in its workforce, letting go of 86 employees last week due to the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The company, which started the year with 120 staff members, decided to cut down its workforce, stating that AI could efficiently handle the tasks previously managed by the sacked employees.

According to Chowdeck, the move was a financially strategic decision, as maintaining a leaner workforce allows the company to reduce salary costs and improve profitability.

This development reflects the growing impact of AI on traditional job roles, a trend that is reshaping industries and leaving many workers vulnerable to automation.
As AI continues to replace human labor, experts warn that more businesses may follow suit, prioritizing cost efficiency over human employment.

AI can take orders both in person and for drive-tnroughs if they offer that service, and some vending machines too can do the cash work. They may decide to outsource their delivery service, instead of managing one in-house.

Inventory/stocks can be effectively managed with minimal human assistance as well. I think drone deliveries, cleaners and automatic cooking devices may be cutting it too far but not out of it altogether.

It's getting serious, AI is now collecting jobs from people. We saw the future then.

What skill is really required here? Unlike other jobs where AI can be justified.

The only justification here is profitability at the expense of some people’s daily bread!!!

You'll be surprised that this same company that didn't have enough money to pay their workers more than 100k each for example, will be investing hundreds of millions of naira into AI and later come and start bragging that AI is better. Invest that same amount into your current staff and see if their effectiveness will not skyrocket overnight!
