The Trump administration has detained an Indian student at Georgetown University and is seeking his deportation, citing concerns over US foreign policy, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown’s Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, was arrested outside his home in Rosslyn, Virginia, on Monday night by federal agents, Reuters reports.

He is currently being held in Alexandria, Louisiana, as he awaits a court hearing in immigration court.

According to a statement from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shared with Fox News, Suri is accused of having ties to the Palestinian militant group Hamas and spreading pro-Hamas propaganda and antisemitic content on social media.

The DHS statement, reposted by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, did not provide specific evidence for the claims.

The agency said Secretary of State Marco Rubio had determined Suri's activities warranted his deportation.

Suri, who is in the US on a student visa and married to an American citizen, has denied any wrongdoing.

His lawyer criticized the government’s actions, arguing that the case reflected a broader political dissent crackdown.

"If an accomplished scholar who focuses on conflict resolution is whom the government decides is bad for foreign policy, then perhaps the problem is with the government, not the scholar," Suri’s lawyer said in a statement.

Georgetown University has not been informed of the reasons for Suri’s detention and stated that it is unaware of any illegal activities involving him.

Suri has been teaching a class this semester on "Majoritarianism and Minority Rights in South Asia" and holds a Ph.D. in peace and conflict studies from an Indian university.

His wife, Mapheze Saleh, a US citizen originally from Gaza, has not been arrested.

According to Georgetown’s website, Saleh has contributed to Al Jazeera and Palestinian media and previously worked with the foreign ministry in Gaza.

Suri's case follows the Trump administration’s recent efforts to deport foreign students involved in pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Earlier this month, Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil was detained on similar grounds.

Khalil, who is challenging his deportation, has denied any links to Hamas, which the US designates as a terrorist organization.

The administration’s measures have sparked backlash from civil rights groups, who argue that the government is unfairly targeting pro-Palestinian activists.

Trump has accused such protesters of antisemitism, while advocacy groups, including some Jewish organizations, maintain that criticism of Israel's military actions in Gaza is being wrongly conflated with antisemitism.

A Cornell University graduate student has filed a lawsuit challenging United States President Donald Trump's executive orders aimed at going after universities and "foreign national" protesters.

Meanwhile, he has now been asked to "surrender" to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Momodou Taal, a Ph.D. student in Africana Studies at Cornell University, filed the suit on Saturday hoping to prevent the administration from targeting him and others who have participated in pro-Palestinian protests.

An attorney for Taal said he had been targeted by some of the same groups that had advocated for Mahmoud Khalil's arrest and that his client feared he could be next.

Taal is a citizen of the U.K. and Gambia and is in the United States on a student visa.

According to court records, Taal was temporarily suspended from Cornell in April and September of 2024 for his participation in student protests.

Instead of imposing sanctions that could have affected his immigration status, the university chose to allow Taal to continue studying remotely until Spring 2025 when his full access to the campus would be restored, his lawyers said.

In an X post on Wednesday, Taal said law enforcement agents "from an unidentified agency" had been seen parked outside his home in Ithaca, New York.

"Trump is attempting to detain me to prevent me from having my day in court," he wrote.

On Thursday, attorney Eric Lee filed an affidavit, stating, "It appears the government is attempting to detain Mr. Taal imminently."

Witnesses had seen an undercover law enforcement official parked outside Taal's home, his attorney said.

The man allegedly showed the witnesses a badge "indicating he is a member of law enforcement."

Taal's attorneys petitioned for a temporary restraining order seeking to prevent his arrest.

However, on Friday, his attorneys said they received an e-mail from a Justice Department lawyer asking Taal to turn himself in to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"ICE invites Mr. Taal and his counsel to appear in-person at the HSI Office in Syracuse at a mutually agreeable time for personal service of the NTA and for Mr. Taal to surrender to ICE custody. Accordingly, if you are interested in proposing such a date and time, we will promptly forward it to ICE for consideration," the email read.

The United States mission in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to visa holders, cautioning that overstaying a visa could lead to severe consequences, including criminal prosecution and a permanent travel ban.

The US Mission made this announcement in a statement released on Monday.

“If you overstay your U.S. visa, you could face a permanent ban on travelling to the United States as well as criminal prosecution,” the statement read.

It further emphasised that US consular officers have full access to individuals’ immigration history and past violations.

The statement added, “Consular officers have full access to your immigration history and will know about past violations.

“There is no such thing as an "honest mistake” – it is your responsibility to use your visa correctly.”

US immigration laws and policies have undergone significant changes since President Donald Trump took over power.

Recall also that Trump’s presidency between 2017–2021 saw the introduction of strict immigration enforcement measures, many of which continued under subsequent administrations.

One of Trump's most controversial actions was the implementation of the “zero tolerance” policy, which resulted in the prosecution of all illegal border crossings and led to family separations.

Additionally, the Travel Ban, commonly known as the “Muslim Ban”, restricted entry from several predominantly Muslim countries, including Nigeria, though it was later lifted by President Joe Biden in 2021.

In 2019, the Trump administration imposed stricter public charge rules, making it harder for immigrants to obtain green cards if they relied on government assistance.

Furthermore, in 2020, citing the COVID-19 pandemic, the administration enacted the Title 42 policy, which allowed for rapid expulsion of migrants at the border without asylum hearings.

While President Biden has reversed or modified some of these policies, visa overstay penalties remain stringent.

The US government continues to emphasise legal compliance, warning that individuals who violate their visa terms risk severe immigration consequences.

This latest warning highlights the ongoing US strict enforcement of visa and immigration regulations since Trump’s current administration.
