Nigeria’s AYE/NAY Senate culture Is Not Only Obsolete- It’s Illegally Dangerous. by Asonaijaaso(op): 5:16pm On Mar 20, 2025
300,000 citizens line up under sun and rain to elect a governor in Rivers State.
They trust the process.
They vote.
Their voice is heard.

Then — one shout of “AYE!”, one echo of “NAY!” — and the man they voted for is gone?

That is not democracy. That is theater. A loud, dangerous farce.

The Illegality in Plain Sight

When the National Assembly makes decisions as weighty as the removal of an elected governor, it is constitutionally required to follow due process. That includes:
• Confirming a two-thirds quorum of the Senate or House of Representatives.
• Documenting the exact vote count — AYE vs NAY, not just a volume check.
• Recording who voted, who abstained, and who was absent.

Anything less than that is a miscarriage of legislative duty.

Why the “AYE/NAY” System Fails Us

When the National Assembly makes decisions as weighty as the removal of an elected governor, it is constitutionally required to follow due process. That includes confirming that a two-thirds quorum of the Senate or House of Representatives is present, documenting the exact number of votes for “AYE” and “NAY,” and recording who voted, who abstained, and who was absent. Anything less than that is a miscarriage of legislative duty and a slap in the face of the democratic process. The integrity of Nigeria’s democracy cannot hinge on the volume of shouting in a room full of politicians.

Democracy Demands Receipts

If the Assembly wants Nigerians to trust the system:
• Publish roll call votes for every major decision.
• Make vote records accessible to the public within 24 hours.
• Penalize lawmakers who do not attend votes but whose names appear in quorums.

Let Nigerians see with their eyes the list of senators who said AYE to the disenfranchisement of 300,000 voters.
Let Rivers State know the 109 senators by name who decided their fate.

Re: Nigeria’s AYE/NAY Senate culture Is Not Only Obsolete- It’s Illegally Dangerous. by Asonaijaaso(op): 5:16pm On Mar 20, 2025
A vote as serious and irreversible as removing a sitting governor must be followed by full transparency. Nothing less is acceptable.
1. A complete list of all senators who voted AYE must be released to the public.
2. Every senator who abstained or was absent must be named.
3. Those who voted NAY must also be clearly listed.

Nigerians are not spectators. Senators are not voting for themselves — they are acting on our behalf. Every name, every vote, every absence must be accounted for. This is not a monarchy. It is a representative democracy.

When Fubara won, INEC released an official list confirming his mandate. Now that his mandate is being threatened, the Senate must release an equally clear, signed list showing who authorized this attack on the will of Rivers people.

To do otherwise is to admit the Senate has gone rogue. That they no longer represent the people who elected them — but serve some other shadow interest.

I thought we all agreed long ago that election was rigged by Wike in Rivers, how come all of a sudden we have started hearing and reading rhetorics like: "300,000 citizens line up under sun and rain to elect a governor in Rivers State.
They trust the process.
They vote.
Their voice is heard."?
How come?
Will a country every progress when the people inhabiting it turn the scales to favor them and their point?

Exactly, imagine using a voice note to determine the 2/3 in House of Representatives. The current National Assembly is a joke.

If not for the corrupt nature of the senate leadership I don't know why they won't use the billions they budget yearly for the nass to fix a simple electronic voting system for both chambers of the national assembly they just looks childish while watching them shouting aye and nay on tv

"Mischief" is when u bend narratives based on sentiments, u guys will list Rivers as a place where election results were "written" by Wike, same Fubara was Wike's anointed candidate, but because it doesn't suit your narratives today, you have all switched to people voted Fubara, had it been Fubara aligned with Tinubu, you all will say he was rigged in, that's the mischief.

If you aren't upto mischief, you'd know that rigging is not 100%.

I'm not particularly defending Fubara, afterall,
he joined Wike to rig Obi out for Tinubu so he had it coming but I'm defending the constitution that prevents an elected official from removing another elected official

If Rivers election was rigged like u guys have been claiming for almost 2 years now, who then elected Fubara in Rivers?
Does a rigged result translate to elected official?

U see how talks come back to bîtè?
U said there was no election in Rivers that Wike wrote results, today, Fubara is an elected official.

Stop being mischievous. I said Wike swapped Obi results for Tinubu. We saw the videos on TipEx being used to alter results

When Fubara was still on the side of Wike and Wike was supporting Tinubu, you all said he was rigged in, today, only Tinubu's results was written by Wike while the people voted Fubara, the mischievous ones projecting themselves on others.

Fubara joined Wike to rig Obi out. Fubara ekection was also rigged, doesn't mean he didn't get somd percentage of legitimate voters
