The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has strongly condemned the recent decision by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) permission to challenge a Federal High Court ruling that barred it from retrying former Abia State Governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, over an alleged N7.1 billion fraud.

In a press statement signed by its President General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, and made available to ABN TV, COSEYL described the development as a politically motivated attempt to harass and discredit Igbo leaders. The group expressed concerns over what it called a violation of constitutional principles and a threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s judicial system.

“The Federal High Court had previously discharged and acquitted Senator Kalu after a thorough legal process due to insufficient evidence. However, the sudden move by the EFCC to push for a retrial raises serious questions about the true intentions behind this legal battle,” COSEYL stated.

According to the youth group, the timing of the retrial suggests a political agenda rather than a genuine effort to ensure accountability. It alleged that certain forces were using the case as a tool to weaken the influence of the former governor, whom it described as a leader dedicated to the welfare of his people.

COSEYL urged the EFCC to maintain its credibility by avoiding political interference in its operations. The group warned that pursuing a retrial after an acquittal could erode public trust in the judiciary and set a dangerous precedent for politically motivated prosecutions.

“We call on the EFCC not to allow itself to be used for political permutations ahead of the 2027 elections. Justice should be based on facts and legal merit, not on political interests,” the statement concluded.

The retrial of Senator Kalu has sparked reactions across political and legal circles, with many closely monitoring how the case unfolds in the coming months.

He was not discharged and acquitted, he was actually convicted. The only reason he was released from jail was because the Supreme Court ruled that the judge that tried and convicted him should have allowed another Judge to take over the case because he was promoted to court of appeal

In other words, during Orji Uzo Kalu's trial, the Judge was promoted, but continued with the case, instead of handing over to another Judge

Kalu was lucky, he won't be so lucky next time because the evidence brought against him in the first trial was overwhelming

I am no fan of Kalu any day but EFCC is the most useless organization on the face of the earth

If you are comparing Sunday igboho actions to that of Nmandi kanu, then you need a brain surgery. Did you see or hear that igbohos boys killed or destroyed properties. Nmandi kanu through is order and action led to alot of death till date and properties worth billions even up till now has been destroyed. So because the Northern Apc members didn't support okorocha means they were against igbos. How many Northerners supported Osibanjo the sitting vice president as at that time. Tinubu have used many years to build his political structure that will lead him to presidency. Which role did okorocha played in formation of Apc and oiling the party to victory to Tinubu who even the Northern knows, he played the major role in Buhari's victory. Do you think speaking hausa language and the rochas free foundation school in the north is enough to vote him. Did they put gun on his neck to build free school over there. Kalu was convicted and duly sentenced to the prison cell he rightfully deserves, but the SC freed him on a technicality. The judge who passed the sentence was technically not supposed to be a judge at that court since he had already been elevated to a higher one. Kalu is Tinubu's close ally and so I don't expect anything to come out of it
