Asake's Fall From Grace: Is It The Price Of Untangling From Olamide's Empire? by Akinpedia(op): 4:14pm On Mar 23, 2025
The Nigerian music scene is a battlefield, a relentless churn of rhythm and ambition. And for a glorious, head-spinning period, Asake was its undisputed landlord. Every track he dropped, was a seismic event, instantly claiming the throne atop the charts. From "Sungba" to "Organise," his reign was seemingly unbreakable, a testament to his raw talent and Olamide's Midas touch at YBNL.

But then, the whispers started. The "Landlord" was moving out. The golden era seemed to fade as Asake's chart dominance began to waver. Songs that once would have soared to number one now found themselves battling for airspace, lingering in the shadows of their former glory. This sudden shift has ignited a fiery debate: what happened?

The YBNL Factor: A Faustian Bargain?

The narrative is familiar. Time and again, we've seen artists catapulted to stardom under the wing of a powerful label, only to face a stark reality check upon venturing out solo.

Is it simply a matter of losing the promotional machine, the established network, the sheer weight of a label's influence?
Or
is there something more insidious at play, a subtle alchemy that fades when the artist steps outside the established formula?

YBNL, under Olamide's astute guidance, is a proven hit-maker. They've nurtured raw talent into chart-topping titans. The question is, how much of Asake's meteoric rise was attributable to his undeniable talent, and how much to the YBNL ecosystem?

The "Father-Son" Feud: A Calculated Drama?

Enter the swirling rumors of a rift, a "father-son" misunderstanding between Asake and Olamide. The internet, as always, is ablaze with speculation. Is this a genuine fallout, a clash of creative visions? Or, as some suggest, a carefully orchestrated publicity stunt, a calculated move to inject drama and intrigue into Asake's narrative, reigniting his chart-topping potential?

The argument is compelling: controversy sells. In a saturated market, a compelling storyline can be the difference between a hit and a forgotten track. The "struggling artist fighting against the odds" narrative is a classic trope, one that resonates deeply with audiences.

The Price of Independence: A Cautionary Tale?

Regardless of the truth behind the rumors, Asake's post-YBNL journey serves as a potent reminder of the precarious nature of success in the music industry. The allure of independence is undeniable, the promise of creative control and financial autonomy. But the reality is often a harsh awakening.

The blog post author's advice rings true: "Most times when an artiste leaves the label that gave him fame, he starts to struggle. This is why I advise that artists settle their differences with their labels amicably."

While artistic freedom is paramount, the value of a strong support system, a well-oiled machine, cannot be underestimated. The music industry is a complex labyrinth, and navigating it alone is a daunting task.

The Future of Asake: A Question Mark?

Will Asake reclaim his throne? Will the "father-son" feud, whether real or imagined, propel him back to the top? Or will his post-YBNL journey be a cautionary tale, a stark reminder of the challenges that lie beyond the label's walls?

Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: the Nigerian music scene is watching, waiting, and ready to crown a new landlord. And Asake, the former king, is fighting for his right to reclaim his kingdom.

Nigerian music industry has always been like that. Only few maintain that top spot for life.

Even the likes of Davido and Wizkid are struggling with rhythm. In my opinion, I believe Nigerian artiste don’t put in that “SAME” work they invested prior to fame.

I still cannot find someone in Nigeria who can be compared to R.Kelly. Dude put in continuous work that he even remixed his own song and still was a hit.

Just give a Nigeria artiste fame and his career will die slowly. Max 2 albums and he will disappear never to appear again.

But still, BNXN is a guy to look out for. His creativity is top notch and his music pattern the most flexible and adaptive.

His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) has always stressed and emphasized the usefulness of dynamics, fluidity and flexibility in trade.

2024 and 2025 so far has not been a good year for new Afrobeats songs internationally. It's a genre wide issue, not unique to Asake. He's actually putting out good stuff. The problem is, and correct me if I'm wrong, no Afrobeats song has made it into the Top 20 of major main charts (like billboard 100, UK top 40 etc) for over a year now. I think one of Burna Boy's song made it into the UK top 40 last year. New Afrobeats songs remain popular in Africa and amongst the African diaspora and their associates. However, they are not crossing over like they did from 2019 to 2024. Hopefully it's just a blip and it'll be business as usual later on this year.

Artistry and record label management are two distinctly separate skills. You may be good in either or both of them, the main thing is to know your strength and focus on it. Dbanj and Don Jazzy in retrospect.

Maintaining relevance in a cut throat music industry is no child's play for both quality songs and ensuring people get to the hear the song.

That's why many artists' careers bank 90 degrees to the left once they quit the record label.

Asake never fell from the top, it's just too lonely at the top for him.
Presently, he has a song at the top of the Nigerian music chart, even without his old label. He's just undergoing a major rebranding.
You’ll have to watch out some more for him, before you shoot yourself in the leg OP. 😉
