After all, many men of God also receive the same invitations for the purpose of drawing the attention of the multitude in hopes of winning them over, without charging any appearance fees.

The pastor is correct. It's called honorarium. Even in my church, there's an unwritten rule that you cannot invite guests - whether a pastor or an artist - to your church and leave them empty-handed. This is quite different from appearance fees, which typically involve fixed amounts, legal conditions and consequences, down payments, and invoices.
