The House of Representatives has approved a bill seeking to accommodate Lagos State’s 37 Development Area Councils as full-fledged local government areas (LGAs).

If enacted into law, this will increase the total number of LGAs in the state from 20 to 57.

The bill which was among the 42 constitutional amendment bills passed on Wednesday was sponsored by Hon. James Abiodun Faleke (Ikeja Federal Constituency), Hon. Babajimi Benson (Ikorodu Federal Constituency), and Hon. Enitan Dolapo Badru (Lagos Island I Federal Constituency), alongside 19 other lawmakers.

The proposed legislation is titled "A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to Accommodate the Thirty-Seven (37) Development Area Councils of Lagos State as Full-Fledged Local Government Areas, Increasing the Total Number of Local Government Areas in the Federation to Eight Hundred and Eleven (811), and for Related Matters (HB. 1498)"

It scaled second reading on Wednesday during plenary presided over by deputy speaker, Benjamin Kalu.

If passed into law also, it will bring the total number of local governments in Nigeria to 811 from 774

It will also allow Lagos to officially have the highest number of local governments in Nigeria, surpassing Kano and Katsina states, which currently have 44 and 34 LGAs, respectively.

It is long overdue. Lagos has remain a single state with 20lg whereas Kano state with similar population was divided and Jigawa and Katsina came out of it. Today Kano has 44LG, Katsina 37 and Jigawa has over 20 LG, but Lagos state where the bulk of revenue is generated is still choked in 20LG,

if this can be passed by both chamber then I would give it to the Nass as the best Nass since the creation of Nigeria

Lagos can get additional local governments but the east can not get additional states, right?

So, Alimosho, with a total landmass of 183.5 km² and currently comprising one LGA and five LCDAs, will now be divided into six LGAs. This bill should be ignored.

This is a constitutional change so must require concurrence from 2/3 of all state houses of assembly. This makes it almost impossible

Landmass? Is it what you to determine LGA? Lagos state richer than your whole region combined. My state Rivers state deserves smar LGA like lagos because these two states is the reason Nigeria is still standing. Landmass is useless when it doesn't equate to money for the government

The total land mass of South-West Nigeria is approximately 200,000 Km2 while your backyard of old Gongola state, landlocked Taraba is 54,473km2 of mostly unoccupied land mass as seen from satellite images of your state.

Please quit misinforming yourself and less discerning others. Don't confuse SouthWest Nigeria that is blessed with a huge land mass and access to the Atlantic Ocean with South East that's land locked and has small land mass o.

South West Nigeria has so much immense land mass that it can stand on its own as a country if not for our unshakable allegiance to Nigeria .Add the Atlantic ocean portion of Nigeria to South West Nigeria that opens into the Atlantic Ocean in Lagos, Ogun and Ondo state, then South West may actually be larger than the whole Northern Nigeria exuding Yorubaland parts of Northern Nigeria!

Those states has no population. The only populated areas in northern states are Sabon gari. I've been to all mothern states. I've moved to the villages and you hardly see the population they're talking about. Big lands without people. Kano State, Kaduna and Niger State has good numbers. The rest are noise! Audio
