Nollywood actress Lili Afe has expressed her shock and frustration after being asked to pay $1,200 for aso ebi for a friend’s wedding in Lagos.

Taking to Instagram on March 26, 2025, Lili shared her disbelief, explaining how she had eagerly congratulated her friend upon receiving the wedding invitation—only to be taken aback by the staggering cost of the chosen fabric.

“Una Don dey sell aso ebi in dollars for Lagos? You people sell aso ebi for your own wedding in dollars now? You guys are doing too much!” she exclaimed.

Recounting her experience, Lilli Afe added, “I was on my own when a friend of mine sent me an invitation to her wedding, after which I congratulated her happily. I checked the date to make sure the date didn’t clash with timing, that’s how I checked the price and saw 1200, I initially thought the price was in Naira, thinking, ‘shey she’s doing giveaway?'”

The actress’s reaction has sparked conversations online, with many social media users weighing in on the rising cost of wedding traditions in Nigeria.

You are not buying only cloth. You will sew the Aso Ebi, buy probably new shoe, gift the celebrant something, spray money during the party, your expenses to and fro and if there is after party elsewhere, another extra spending

You will be shocked to see the number of people that have already paid. They will call her broke woman and other sort of names for this outburst.

Nigerians will rather steal what belong to the next generation to impress their fellow Nigerians than to allow their society to progress. I won't say blacks are useless creatures but very certain we are not reasonable humans that should be in a modern society.

What government authority is saddled with the responsibility to ensure that transactions within Nigeria are done in Naira?

Why should anyone or company be selling items in Nigeria to Nigerians in dollars or foreign currency?

This is supposed to be an offense punishable under law.

I detest this culture from the South west that is creeping into all corners of the country.
Naive/Greedy couples especially my gender would heap unnecessary pressure on the groom then after blame him when funds are no more available to enjoy the marriage proper because he/they had used his/their life savings and sometimes borrowed to meet up with expectations .
