Sinkhole. It is when water flows under the ground eroding the bottom soil. After a while the surface gives way. Lots of times in developed cities like this where you have municipal water supply through underground pipes which are under pressure, when you have rupture, it may remain undetected for a while, meanwhile it is washing away the soil under the road, over time the surface collapses and creates a gaping hole.
