Governors of the five states in Nigeria’s Southeast geopolitical zone have resolved to meet with President Bola Tinubu to request a national honour for the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

Nwosu, who conducted the June 12, 1993, presidential election, is widely credited with organising Nigeria’s freest and fairest election, which was won by Chief M.K.O. Abiola but later annulled by the then Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida.

The governors’ decision follows the Nigerian Senate’s rejection of a motion to honor Nwosu, despite his significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic history.

Speaking at Nwosu’s burial in Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, expressed optimism that President Tinubu would grant their request.

“We must learn to change our style and devise a means of dialogue to get what we need from the government at the center, not through fighting and attacks,” Soludo said.

"After the funeral, we, the Southeast Governors, will meet with the President over the national honour for our brother, and we are sure he will grant our request.”

The Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, who represented President Tinubu at the funeral, assured attendees that the federal government values Nwosu’s contributions to democracy.

He noted that discussions are already underway to address two requests made by Nwosu’s family, with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) expected to communicate the final decision to Governor Soludo.

“He played a very vital role in shaping Nigerian democracy and governance. The country will continue to celebrate him and his achievements,” Umahi stated.

Other dignitaries present at the burial included Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Emeka Ihedioha, former Governor of Imo State, and Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central.

However, the event was not without controversy. Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, former Archbishop of Enugu Anglican Diocese, criticised Senator Adams Oshiomhole and the Senate for blaming Nwosu for the annulment of the June 12 election.

“That statement by Oshiomhole is uncalled for because Humphrey Nwosu did not annul the June 12 election. Former President Babangida has already owned up to that decision,” Chukwuma stated, adding that Nigerians owe both Abiola and Nwosu an apology.

“This country has produced men and women like Prof. Humphrey Nwosu who could have liberated Nigeria,” he said. “But today, professors rig elections for school dropouts and drug barons, and you say Nigeria will be great?”

If they want national honor, Tinubu should give him one posthumous national honor and they can close this topic.

But I don’t subscribe to immortalizing him by renaming INEC headquarters to his name. He has done nothing courageous to merit that.

This is a lesson everyone must learn that if you keep quiet when evil is being perpetuated, you, like Late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, will be called a coward for life

Nwosu had one job annouce the winner of the 1993 election. States have already annouced their results.....he chickened out....too timid to do his job.

Nigerians bravely told the military to hell with your annulment .....we voted and MKO Abiola of the SDP won.....many brave men and women lost their lives for doing what Nwosu failed to do.....MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, many Nigerians students lost their lives, many were exiled but they did not stop telling the military to hell with you we voted and Abiola won.

To say let us honour the coward is an insult to the memory of Nigerians who rejected Nwosu's excuses for running away from his responsibility

The Igbo nation must find true heros not gather history revionsits to tell us that lived the time who deserves honour

one thing I get to understand lately is that present day Igbos have began to realise their forefathers messed up so they are so ashamed to come to terms with the new reality so they are trying to rewrite history

A court order came on 10th June, two days to the election, ordering Nwosu not to conduct elections. Nwosu used an existing military decree to by pass it and conduct the elections. Had he wanted, the elections would never have been held

After the elections, another court order came on 16th June, stopping Nwosu from announcing the results of the elections. Nwosu immediately went court to overturn that court order so he could annouce the results, but was sacked from his job and NEC dissolved on 23 June. The Lagos/Ibadan expressway media and their Northern cohorts know all this but prefer to dwelling on lies because Nwosu is an Igbo man

National honour does not automatically make one a hero, cats and dogs receive national honour. As far as INEC hqtrs is not named after him. Even the bypass road of 2nd Niger bridge can be named after him when completed, nobody cares.

So these clowns want honour from the same zoo they castigate every day. Yeeebos remain fourth class citizens till eternity.
