I got interested in urban gardening after reading several threads here in the agric section about growing crops in polythene sacks such as the common Dangote cement sack. The process was straight forward as you will just have to fill the sack with fertile soil and cultivate any type of plant you wish except trees. After cultivating for 6 months, I found out that cement sack is not a good option when it comes to gardening. One major problem I faced was microplastics. When you start cultivating with sacks, you will enjoy it as they are firm and strong, can withstand any strain and force. But as time went one, this sacks become a challenge to withstand. High temperature from direct sunlight and high humidity will breakdown the sacks into tiny particles called microplastics which are debilitating for the environment. The sack weakens and will just collapse, this can happen within 4-6 months. Cleaning soil polluted with micro plastics is no joke. Likewise, sacks will make your soil compact irrespective of how fertile your soil is. Water penetration deep into the soil won’t be possible and your plant will become dehydrated quickly.

The use of plastic buckets 🪣 is more sustainable than feed and cement sacks but they also face the same fate like sacks but it would just take a little longer. After making research, I discovered that tyres could be a better option,
1. Controlling land pollution as the tyres would be of good use
2. Tyres are wider and can take in a lot of soil,consequently allowing plants roots to spread
3. Doesn’t experience breakdown like in sacks
4. You could add more depth for deep rooted
plants by simply stacking tyres on top of each other.
