He referenced past incidents in Bauchi State, where local communities successfully fought off Boko Haram insurgents without waiting for security forces. The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, has stated that Nigerians must take responsibility for their own security, as the military, police, and intelligence agencies do not have the capacity to protect every community from terrorist attacks nationwide. Ajayi made the remarks during a public engagement, which Symfoni broadcasted. He referenced past incidents in Bauchi State, where local communities successfully fought off Boko Haram insurgents without waiting for security forces. "Speaking seriously about the practical approach to mobilising against insecurity, I will share my experience when I was a State Director in Bauchi," Ajayi said. "Most of you will remember an incident in Azare. A group of Boko Haram terrorists invaded Azare, shooting in an attempt to kidnap people. But the community fought back. They killed some members of the community, but in the end, the people killed all of them. Since that day, there has not been a single terrorist attack in Azare." Ajayi went further to cite former dictator General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) as endorsing the idea of community-led resistance. "As a matter of fact, the former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, said, and I quote, ‘If we want to stop or curb terrorism, we should emulate the Azare example.’" According to Ajayi, Tafawa Balewa Local Government in Bauchi State also serves as a case study of community defence. He said: "The people there rose up on one occasion. They knew their terrain better, climbed up the trees and mountains, and when the invaders came, they not only stopped them but also seized their weapons. Since then, you hardly hear about attacks in Tafawa Balewa. "What I am trying to say is that the practical approach to mobilising people is that you have to get everyone involved. You cannot expect the Nigerian Army, police, or DSS to protect every Nigerian in every community. “It is impossible to deploy security forces everywhere. No security agency has the resources to do that." Ajayi urged Nigerians to rethink their approach to self-defence, emphasising that communities must serve as the "first line of defence" against terrorists and other criminals. "The military, police, and other security agencies are there to handle the bigger threats. But communities must take responsibility for defending themselves at the local level. “Our culture is communal. We do things together—weddings, ceremonies, and everything. So why can’t we fight against some of the miscreants among us together? The community should make it clear: ‘You cannot come here.’ "This is what Tafawa Balewa has done. If you go there to attack them, you will regret it. I challenge anybody to try it." Ajayi called on Nigerian elites and influential figures to encourage this model in their communities. "When we leave here, those of us who have influence, the elites in society, must discuss with our communities. Come to us, get some approvals and guidance, and then we can stop these criminals,” he added. https://saharareporters.com/2025/04/01/dont-expect-army-police-others-protect-all-you-mobilise-defend-yourselves-against |

As nigeria of today, this is the best thing to do. Every community should have a strong local vigilante. Unfortunately some will be attacked by terrorists renamed herdsmen and if the community retaliates, the next thing, police will wake from their sleep and start arresting the villagers. Anybody killed in self defence is charged as a murder case. That is the problem |

This is the way forward, however, the LGAs Chairmen should lead and collaborate with village Head down to the youth, so that it can get government backing and the necessary approval, trainings and regulations, and as well have means of communication. |

MEEVEET:The ESN is quite an effective model. However it has no legal backing. No state/local govt support! At least a rep or senators' endorsement would have given it legitimacy. That way, someone can be held responsible in case of any excesses. |

Recently, a farmer in Nigeria's Middle Belt was sentenced to death over the outcome of a desperate hand-to-hand skirmish that occurred on his farmland, during which the ambushed farmer was able to disarm a knife-wielding Fulani terrorist attacker, and neutralize that attacker with his own dagger. To dispel any doubts that may have lingered concerning the official position of the Nigerian federal government on the subject of civilian self-defence responses that result in the death of Fulani invaders, that grossly unfair death sentence was UPHELD by the Nigerian Supreme Court. Barring any compassionate intervention by his Excellency President Bola Tinubu, that farmer, whose only crime was to prevail during a frenzied knife attack by killing the Fulani mugger who invaded his farm, will hang by the neck one day soon inside prison until dead, just as would a person convicted of premeditated capital murder. For such a terrifying travesty of justice to have been upheld by the Nigerian Supreme Court is a sobering illustration of what WILL happen to any farmer or land owner whose self-defence actions taken against rampaging Fulani invaders lead to any loss of Fulani lives. The purported call to arms by Nigerian government officials now urging southern Nigerian land owners and farmers to defend themselves using deadly force against Fulani terrorist invasion, being issued at the very time when that brave farmer sits awaiting the hangman in jail because he defended his farmland from a Fulani knife-wielding invader, will create an existential dilemma in the minds of ALL Nigerians who have felt the terror and seen the devastation wrought by this horde of bloodthirsty Fulani land grabbers. On one hand, a farmer who successfully defended his farm against a Fulani terrorist invader was immediately sentenced to death by the highest court in the land, while on the other hand, millions more southern Nigerians are being encouraged to take up arms against land-grabbing invaders by the top brass of the country's paramount security agency. It remains to be seen whether that farmer will be hanged. |

The farmer defended himself and was sentenced to death, vigilantes in Edo defended themselves and they are now in jail, politicians should keep pushing the people to the wall, when millions rise up, I wonder how many they can arrest. |

OkpaNsukkaisBae:Parallels can be drawn between South Africa's Apartheid laws that allowed invading white people to simply GRAB the most fertile land in South Africa by force of arms, and present day Nigeria where Fulani terrorists are protected by the might of the federal government as they swarm the southern regions of Nigeria destroying crops, murdering land owners, and forcibly occupying the most fertile land they can find. |

We are on a long thing in Nigeria where you have a MOPOL squadron dedicated to only one individual in certain cases while some have at least 6 escorting them 24/7......same applies to NSCDC officers anf to a lesser extent the military so why will the DSS not tell us to protect ourselves ![]() |

This is the most senseless news about the security I have ever red. 1 Do Nigerians have any weapon to use to defend themselves, if you want us to defend ourselves by ourselves government should legalize weapon for everyone and make it affordable. 2 Those who succeeded in defend themselves and resulted in death of their attackers, what happened to them? Death sentence 3 If the attackers are armed herdsmen, if them succeed in killing their victims nothing will happen but if they lost their lives they will turn to innocent hunter. 4 The farmers who defended their farms with what they knew to defend their farms with, what happened to them? wasn't you people arrested them? 5 the most peaceful and lawful way to defend oneself is to have video record of his/her attackers while carrying out his evil work, of all the videos circulating online about Fulani herdsmen destroying people's farms, have you ever arrest anyone of them? Nigeria is the only country in the world which her law give upper hand to attackers against his/her victims. |

Who really is on charge of Nigeria both as commander in chief of the armed forces , chief of Army staff and inspector general of police. It seems Nigeria is off the gears. It really seems the seconds of Nigeria are counted. We are in the 11th hour 59th minute. Make God help the innocent and naive people of the east , for the other people, it is Good Morning. |

Jakumo:Its terrible, just terrible. PS: There is an unspoken and unwritten bond by Nigerian Governors not to sign death warrants. I believe it was only breached by Oshiomole once. Thus, for the most part, death sentences translate to life in prison - thus far. Not that this ameliorates the injustice done to that farmer. |
