Emergency can happen anytime even with best preparation. Maybe she became unconscious at home and he rushed her to the closest clinic. I pray you are never in these situation to see the horror of healthcare in Nigeria. I lost tree sisters to sickle cell and one died because of negligence and asking family members to be doing the work the clinics should be doing even when you have money to pay. The system needs reform. I even support banning for profit primary healthcare facilities. That way the heartless and greedy ones will leave the professional. Medicines is a noble profession, not for rif rafs and chalatans. If the clinic had treated her and did a go fund me, they will recoup 100X what she owned. That $350, even me as a stranger would have paid it on her behalf. Not everyone places money over human life thankfully.

We are fond of misusing the idea of intervention or emergency in Nigeria. They are for cases like these where the couple can't easily replace what is at stake - life.

If your soul is dead to the point you have no mercy for a pregnant woman then too bad for you and a calamity for anyone that call you a life partner/spouse.

How can one expect a pregnancy to pass without a major event. The likelihood of having a child vaginally/through CS is 50/50.
You have to plan the moment the lady becomes pregnant.
If that man had offered N300k out of N500k at least that the hospital would not have turned them away.
They could have started shopping around hospitals to know the cost for CS and taken the cheapest option.
I have kids - immediately my husband and I find out that I am pregnant we start putting funds together because anything can happen.

i saw this heartbreaking video on twitter today.. mehn naija is a horrible country but u won't blame the hospital.. they must have gotten their finger bitten before that made them harden their heart. Must u go to private hospital? There are even local yoruba women that give birth to babies for low income families. For them to request initial 500k deposit means its an expensive hospital. didn't she go for ante-natal? what happen to the hospital she was using all these while?

Well, that's all some people have. Actually, he probably wasn't told to expect complications and then he started hoping for a miracle. He probably thought things would go well like it has always been for every woman in his family. Until he got unlucky.

I've not seen that thread but it's not realistic - some people can't find that money. But I know people on SM don't live in the real world.

If there's a law to punish hospitals for rejecting emergency patients before payment, there should also be a law to pay the hospital in case the emergency patient refuses to pay, or is unable to pay after treatment.



Don't blame the hospital. Don't blame the patient.
Blame the people ruling you. Blame the poor health insurance coverage.



Edit: for those saying 9 months is enough to prepare, emergency can happen anywhere at anytime and you may not be close to your own main hospital where you registered. The stupidity of Nigerians is that they can't see that what happened to this man can happen to you or anyone close to you. Imagine having millions in your account but you suddenly go unconscious somewhere far away from home, na so so hospitals go dey reject you until you die (God forbid) because they can't access your account. But that's the reality of the system. You think it can't be you or someone close until it happens.

Let's collectively speak up for change now.

One has to be very alert and close to a trusted hospital.

Same thing happened to me. private hospital are wicked. Hospital I had my first child , after the delivery I bought minerals for all the staffs even the owner of the clinic. I even brought food for the staffs during our naming. Fast forward to having my second child , we had already done deposit during antenatal, so when my wife wanted to deliver the doctor suggested she do cs . Could you imagine this nonsense woman was telling me to make transfer first before they start anything. I was mad. At that point I was trying to sell some funds from my PayPal which delayed but I ended up selling and transferring to the useless doctor. Before they started attending to my wife. My wife was just crying in her condition. That day I hated that doctor . A woman for that matter

Which war? Less than 15% of births involve complications globally - whatever the figures are, people's reference is people around them. Someone who isn't much educated who's always seen women around him give birth without an issue will grow up expecting that. Have you been to our villages where people give birth at home without ever having taken a pill?

Yeah, shop around. But what good would that have done them if they just can't find 500k or the money to RELOCATE near a general hospital (cheapest option) - since we're judging everyone by your standards?

Besides a wise person should have a set aside hospital closer in the time of delivery.

Be it government or private. This should be known as test are been done during the 9 months.
