Sad. They should have transferred them to a government health facility
If they transfer them, thats more bills for the man. I'm sure they were told to go to government hospitals but the man refused

I was wondering why they didn't go straight to a government hospital, since the husband knows he is yet to raise any money. Which hospital did she register for antenatal? Plenty questions to ask.
No government hospital has bed space. Its always filled up thus private is the next available choice

I want to believe you're a woman.

Choosing bottom line over two lives, one of which is unborn, is not only cruel, but the highest form of inhumanity. The Hippocratic Oath specifically mentions preservation of life. Who says the family might not get financial help after all said and done?
Do you people even know what is written in this Hippocratic Oath u r quoting upandan?

Used to work in a private hospital where the owner would treat patients like this man free of charge. Some of them will pay up but most would abscond without paying. When the owner started having issues paying salaries and getting consumables, that's when he hardened up.

Some of us here will call him evil

I did my nysc at a mission hospital somewhere in the south. In that same village there was once a private hospital run by a indigene who came back from the USA to run that hospital. Na so his tribespeople dey tell am say we go pay later only for them to not pay

Hospital collapsed in two years. Oga just jejely found his way back to the USA.

Any joke calling the hospital.heartless.should remember that hospitals have staff and other financial obligations . If patients are refusing to pay, how is the hospital expected to survive?

Do you know what it means to not be paid simply because too many patients have run away after begging ? Do you guys know how many patients we have dipped hand into our pocket to pay for? Or na to call us heartless?

Better blame the man for not being on a hmo at least. Na him cause his problem

Blame the society.

A society in which a man with a pregnant wife didn't save up emergency fund. Blame the society in which a hospital will offer medical care on humanitarian ground, then the patients and their family members will play a fast one later. Our people can harden anyone's heart.

Imagine if they keep on saving lives without payment. What do you think would eventually happen?
A while ago, a friend of mine had a tough experience. His wife had given birth, but by the eighth day—the day of the naming ceremony—they were still in the hospital because they couldn’t settle the bills. The hospital, not trusting that he would return to pay, refused to discharge them and held them back. Thankfully, we managed to raise the money, and they were released.

As difficult as that was, I still think it’s a far better situation than when a hospital refuses to admit a patient in critical condition simply because they don’t trust the family to come back and pay. Turning them away in such a moment, forcing them to seek help elsewhere, can be the difference between life and death—and in this case, it was a death sentence.

I saw the news somewhere else and was surprised at the mortuary looking hospital that requested 500k deposit. To do what exactly?

I thought they passed a law against this deposit before attending to emergencies?

Pregnancy can go either way in seconds.
One has to be very alert and close to a trusted hospital.
That's the same question I have been asking myself

Which hospital charges as high as pre-deposit fee of 500k for normal delivery or maybe it was for CS

Emergency can happen anytime even with best preparation. Maybe she became unconscious at home and he rushed her to the closest clinic. I pray you are never in these situation to see the horror of healthcare in Nigeria. I lost tree sisters to sickle cell and one died because of negligence and asking family members to be doing the work the clinics should be doing even when you have money to pay. The system needs reform. I even support banning for profit primary healthcare facilities. That way the heartless and greedy ones will leave the professional. Medicines is a noble profession, not for rif rafs and chalatans. If the clinic had treated her and did a go fund me, they will recoup 100X what she owned. That $350, even me as a stranger would have paid it on her behalf. Not everyone places money over human life thankfully.
The way you people talk….
So government should ban all the profit oriented clinics? So medicine would be strictly charity? Which country have you seen that happen? How do you think the salaries of the healthcare workers would be paid? Do you think the government can pay the salaries? Are you even aware the government is tired of footing the bill of government hospitals and are monetizing some services?
You are cozy in your profession or business, making money, but want another profession to be strictly charitable, servicing your greed. You people dont wanna demand robust healthcare from your government but want all the docs and hospitals to run at losses for you guys.
Some of you are something else, I swear.

That's why u need good managed healthcare. That's what your government should be doing. Its not the duty of docs or hospitals who are only in business to cater for themselves and families

A hospital isn't a business. It's a basic necessity.

No one should have to pay for that.

The amount of money one crooked politician swipes in a day could pay for medical care for probably millions of people. The amount of money lost when one foreign company doesn't pay a fair price for one shipment of natural resources could probably do the same.

Let's place blame where it belongs.
Sorry. A hospital is a BUSINESS. They pay salaries, foot electricity, drug bills, theater costs etc. Where do u think the money for those would come from? Heaven?

Same thing happened to me. angry private hospital are wicked. Hospital I had my first child , after the delivery I bought minerals for all the staffs even the owner of the clinic. I even brought food for the staffs during our naming. Fast forward to having my second child , we had already done deposit during antenatal, so when my wife wanted to deliver the doctor suggested she do cs . Could you imagine this nonsense woman was telling me to make transfer first before they start anything. I was mad. At that point I was trying to sell some funds from my PayPal which delayed but I ended up selling and transferring to the useless doctor. Before they started attending to my wife. My wife was just crying in her condition. That day I hated that doctor . A woman for that matter
Deposits are important. Maybe u should ask docs why we insist on them in the first place, then you'll hear stories that touch

You are clearly a slowpoke or not well or maybe both. One of those internet crazies that should be locked up somewhere for his/her own good and for the good of society. Yall find a keyboard and start typing rubbish. I was director of a US hospital for 20 years and the pioneer board member for HEDIS evidence based medicine establishment with CMS so I know what a well run healthcare system looks like. In the US, you will be arrested and prosecuted for turning away a patience in an emergency. Many states like the one I live in dont allow for profit in primary care and hospitals because of situations like this. Because of unethical leeching folks like you that put money over human lives. So go stand in one corner and learn and let people with ideas and compassion on improving things offer input instead of injecting emotional poison into a heart breaking story. Unwell person that this they are well. You better go seek therapy.
Are you sure you're a doctor or healthcare personnel?
And which state forbids pay before service? Name the state. I know if you don't have health insurance in the US, u r in trouble. And paying outta pocket is stress. Please stay away from commenting if you want to lie

How old are you sef? 12? You clearly haven't lived life to know emergency happens. They didnt even have to treat her, just stabilize her and arrange her transport to a general hospital. If your soul is dead to the point you have no mercy for a pregnant woman then too bad for you and a calamity for anyone that call you a life partner/spouse.
What do you mean stabilize? She probably had ecclampsia or APH and the best treatment is an emergency cs for which they demanded a deposit. There's no 'first aid' here

be talking like deranged spiritualist there. There should be health insurance for uncovered citizens in emergency.
We are fond of misusing the idea of intervention or emergency in Nigeria. They are for cases like these where the couple can't easily replace what is at stake - life.
You are not making any sense. That guy you quoted made a solid contribution. The moment your wife becomes pregnant, you should work hard and save up for what comes afterwards. For crying out loud, it's a journey of 9 months. The problem with men from this part of the world is that they enjoy having sex but hate taking responsibility for their action.

It's called an emergency for a reason - you can never be fully prepared for it. Just pray to God you don't encounter one beyond your power and financial capacity.

A friend of mine was in a similar situation months back. He cried to me for help after spending over a million in less than 48hours. Luckily for him and his wife, treatment was not stopped while he was out sourcing funds to cover the outstanding bill.

Your comments and most others on this thread are quite disheartening. Compassion matters even to animals, particularly in matters of life or death as this. Where is our humanity? What has happened to us?? We've become so numb that the sanctity of human life means absolutely nothing us anymore.
Unfortunately compassion doesn't pay bills. If I come to your restaurant to eat free, at a point, you'll tell me to fvck off. Does that mean u are not compassionate?

I get you completely. Your friend is sensible. Many Nigerians in that situation run to social media telling people that the hospital has held them hostage, or some of them even abscond.
I'm sure you have seen many stories like that on social media. And who do the populace blame? The hospital of course! Calling them all sorts of names for being heartless etc etc. Some would eventually pay less than one quarter after spending a month or so. Now how do you think would be the fate of this hospital? Remember they have salaries, bills, drugs etc to pay. I need your response to this question

Wait a sec... he had a choice in impregnating his wife but didn't have a choice in about 9 months in selecting the birth option that most suited his pocket and need? Is that really your argument here? 🤨🤨🤨🤨

2. He needed a hospital and could not locate one for about 9 months of the pregnancy. Are you OK? undecided

3. If that is the case, then what is this argument for? undecided
You certainly are too perfect my dear.

So poor people should not have children because they are poor is what you're saying, right?

How do you define an emergency? Be truthful to yourself, do you right now have a well thought out written plan for an emergency? Any kind at all? Financial, emotional, physical, and psychological plan ?

It is easy to judge and castigate others from afar and will never know what it is like to lose two dear ones until it hits closer home. All simply because a hospital refused to provide a service because of bottom line.

⚉a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action.

It is inevitable to lose a loved one at some point. The point of this argument is to do all you can to ensure it is at least not as a result of stewpid decisions or actions — or lack of careful planning — on your part. undecided

5. This man(and his wife since she was, after all, a partner in the marriage) had 9 months to prepare himself — pick an affordable hospital, organize an emergency plan, and raise as much of the funds necessary as possible — but he didn't and that is what lead to those deaths. undecided

Do you people even know what is written in this Hippocratic Oath u r quoting upandan?
You just sit there and type what you don't know.

The Hippocratic Oath is a foundational text in medical ethics, outlining the obligations and conduct expected of physicians, emphasizing the importance of patient well-being, "first, do no harm," and maintaining ethical standards.
Here's a more detailed look:
Key Principles and Promises:
Patient Welfare:
The oath emphasizes the physician's duty to prioritize the patient's health and well-being above all else.
"First, Do No Harm":
This is a core principle, urging physicians to avoid actions that could cause harm or worsen a patient's condition.
Confidentiality:
Physicians are expected to maintain the privacy of their patients' information.
Honesty and Integrity:
The oath stresses the importance of honesty and integrity in all aspects of medical practice.
Respect for Life:
The oath acknowledges the sanctity of human life and encourages respect for all individuals, regardless of their circumstances.

The man and his wife fall under the key principle of respect for life. That hospital failed to value human life and chose money over it.

Before you judge the hospital, read this lengthy post from Dr.PenKing.

Note that the normal average cost of childbirth runs into thousands of dollars in developed countries.

An average Nigerian is one health emergency away from bankruptcy. Stroke gulped 6 million in 4 days from a friends family through cranial surgery and consultancy fees. Having such funds readily available was the difference between life and death of their father.

Get covered by one form of health insurance or another today.
All of you shouting health insurance this, health insurance that, are you not paying attention to what is happening in countries that claim to have a robust health insurance system?

The United Health Care CEO that was assassinated, why do you think it happened? Do you know how many people suffer and die because these evil people in the insurance industry continually deny treatment coverage for you when you are sick?

Imagine you have malaria and you need 6 tablets to get well, health insurance will tell you they can only pay for 2. so what is the point?

Continue to justify your callousness.

Even the best laid plans fail. Life is unpredictable, you are never in total control.

I live my life one day at a time, nobody knows tomorrow.

Pray that life never happens to you.

I'm aware of that. I have witnessed that in a hospital, the hospital usually tells the patient to pay out of pocket for their best benefit.
