Reference:lol even with the increase in tariff it will still be cheaper for America to import from china, vietnam, India etc. America can never beat that. His people will just suffer because they will pay more. He is such a foolish man. |

seunmsg:Just look at you. In your defense of Tinubu's maladministration, you've gone completely out of touch with reality and your own line of argument. You love Tinubu because he's growing reserves and (in turn making life unbearable for his citizens), but you don’t want the same treatment in the US? Your own people grumble and struggle to buy fuel and diesel due to BAT's ignorance. When they complain, you shut them up with useless screenshot about IGR and reserves, but same you expect Americans to hate Trump for inflicting just a fraction of the pain your BAT inflicts on Nigerians everyday. Your screenshot about Argentina is pointless and meaningless. |

SalamRushdie:Why is Nigeria charging as high as 27 percent on American import in the first place? It shouldn't be more than 5 percent or zero percent because what that means is that Nigerians had been paying 27 percent more for goods imported from America plus markup (profit margin) added by the importer or government agencies such as Post Office charged me almost 10,000 Naira for a book I bought for less than 20 dollars including shipping cost. The tariff we charge on American goods is what we should be bringing down to increase the value of Naira against the dollar. No wonder you find Kenya seemly having better trade and investment from America because they charge American goods by 10 percent because tariff like tax or vat is paid by the consumer not the company or the country but by those who by the products that's is heavily taxed. |

nairalee:You and the 2 people who liked your comment have got it completely wrong. Before Trump's announcement Nigeria was charging 27% on imports from USA. After Trump's announcement, Nigeria is still charging 27% on imports from USA. How will that force local industries to produce? The reality is that it will make Nigerian produce MORE expensive in the USA thus reducing trade. If Nigeria wanted to encourage local production, then they have to boost the local conditions and infrastructure that will enable it |

justwise:But on the other hand if Americans are not producing locally, are not working at appropriate levels where will they get the money to buy the stuff the other world countries produce. Trade is a balance and the present administration in the US feels this is the time it should flow in its favour. America wants to increase its productivity and cut it's debts. So for the time being no more giving out freebies, no more careless shopping and a bit more rolling up the sleeves to work. What is wrong with that. |

dominique:The man is indeed the village idiot! When China is done slamming them with tariffs, many of their farmers will be out of business. China is the largest importer of soya beans and pork from america, right now, not only are they talking of heavily taxing american agricultural products, china is thinking of buying those stuff from Brazil. The strange thing is Trump tried this nonsense in his first term and when china retaliated, some American farmers committed suicide. Now Xi is saying his hostile attacks will target republican states where majority voted Trump.🤣. Americans will pay dearly for empowering that idiot. |

I read one full page and couldn't see anyone explaining this thing in a very simple way for me to understand, because am kind of confused here. Please correct me if am wrong with my understanding of this tariffs of a thing. 1. Any goods entering Nigeria from the US, Nigeria government charges 27% tariffs. 2. Now US want to charge 14% tariffs on any goods entering the US from Nigeria. Is my understanding right. If that is right, then what is the problem there. Is US your heaven that other Countries want to be getting things for free always. Can't we just go and develop our Countries and stop depending on other countries like the US. Please correct my understanding. |

Unfortunately, Nigerians in America will still be the one who bears the brunt because it is mostly agricultural products. Some survive only on Nigerian foods. |

To those who don’t understand the point in this news: the USA established a policy of which the sole purpose is to discourage importation of goods. The practical way to implement this policy is to increase tariff on the imported goods. The consequence is it makes those goods expensive to people living in the USA. Hence the people would begin to prefer cheaper versions of those items. The cheaper items are the localized goods - made in and by the USA. It’s a way to promote and encourage local manufacturers in the USA. Nigeria does the same when we placed a 25% tariff on USA imported goods . The implication : USA imported goods prices go up and becomes unaffordable. Reason you see many foreign products in Nigeria these days are so expensive- from Turkey wear to foreign shoes and bags and electronics. From time immemorial this is a policy efficient for economic strengthening and development. |
