That bridge is a 💯 access bridge for people going to the mainland through CMS to agbogbon custain, apapa, surulere etc. It's a major bridge. They should had done there research and find a major alternative before closing it for repairs. Yesterday was. Disaster. I burnt over #15k fuel in traffic.
..you know Nigeria does not plan ahead of time..

Are there plans to deploy traffic wardens on every intersection to avoid another gridlock?

Does ebilokan share bitter leaf with his Yorubalokan followers to calm down their ebiNpawa wailing, in the face of extreme poverty and unemployment?

Glimpsetv:
A large crowd of Lagosians was filmed in a long queue struggling to collect a loaf of bread. To maintain order, several military personnel were on the ground to control the crowd. This has triggered a lot of reactions online.

From what he said .... the bridge is more than 80 years old ... the foundation of the middle span has been almost completely eroded .... a solution has been in the making for the past 3 years and this is the decision that was put into effect.

My take on this is .... did they consider the bridge has long past its lifespan? Was the bridge designed for the heavy traffic of today? ...in terms of volume and weight? Why wasn't a new bridge to meet today's and projected requirements considered? ... especially when this one is already overused? It shouldn't take three years to build a new one and when opened then this one can be closed for repairs without causing chaos. As we can see.... we put ourselves in situations where there are no alternatives. Must this be the only bridge ? If the bridge has deteriorated to this dangerous level ...then what were the ones responsible for its maintenance been doing? These are the investigations that need to be done and instead of apologizing... we need to see heads roll ...hold people accountable.

So with all the engineering students and professors in the department over the years in Nigeria we still decide to hire white to do road construction for us 😭

The faculty of engineering should be shutdown in Nigeria instead I think 🤔

Babajide Sanwo-Olu @jidesanwoolu

This morning, I arrived at the Independence Bridge, Bonny Camp, to personally assess the ongoing repair work being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works.

I sincerely apologise to all Lagosians for the severe traffic congestion experienced yesterday. I understand the frustration, delays, and disruption this has caused in your daily lives. As someone who also moves through this city, I feel your pain, and we do not take your patience and resilience for granted.

The decision to fix the Independence Bridge was not made overnight. This repair has been in the works for over three years, carefully planned to avert a potential disaster. The structural integrity of the bridge had deteriorated, and delaying this intervention any further would have put lives at risk.

While this repair is necessary for the safety of all, I acknowledge the burden it has placed on commuters. We are working closely with all relevant agencies to improve traffic management, and find immediate solutions to ease the congestion.

I assure you that we are not just watching from the sidelines; we have deployed additional traffic monitoring officials and security personnel to ensure traffic flows freely.

I also want to urge businesses and organisations across Lagos to explore flexible work arrangements, including remote work and hybrid models. A temporary shift in work culture can go a long way in reducing traffic pressure and supporting our collective wellbeing.

Let us embrace innovative solutions that keep our city moving while we carry out critical infrastructure repairs. Together, we can build a more resilient, responsive, and liveable Lagos.

Lagosians, I ask for your continued patience and cooperation. Your safety remains our priority, and we are committed to ensuring that our city remains not only a hub of progress but also a place where infrastructure serves the people effectively.

As always, Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated quality leadership. Leaders take responsibility. They don't pay unthinking z o m b i e s to defend their failure, like some crooks do in Abuja.

The verbal optics from Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is absolutely on point here. True leadership entails taking firm responsibility for a major disaster such as the horrendous traffic gridlock that occurred yesterday right into today. A proper simulation should have been made before closing that bridge which is one of the 3 major points leading right into Victoria Island. A proper simulation would have enabled the gridlock which held folks up in their cars right into the period after 12 midnight to be prevented.

The work on that Independence bridge is ABSOLUTELY necessary though. It's time to urgently put more Lagos State-owned ferries, (fitted with the cheaper CNG fuel) on the Lagos waterways to reduce the pressures on the roads from Lagos Mainland to Lagos Island, Victoria Island leading on to Lekki Peninsula and beyond. This would enable the bridge to be urgently repaired. Period.
