US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned countries Wednesday not to retaliate against a barrage of tariffs from the White House, saying if retaliation does not occur, higher customs duty rates will not be applied.

"I would advise none of the countries to panic. I wouldn't try to retaliate, because as long as you don't retaliate, this is the high end of the number," Bessent said in an interview with Bloomberg.

Bessent said markets can be confident that these rates will be fixed as long as no retaliation occurs.

Noting that countries had reached out for tariff negotiations, he said what will be done in this regard depends on President Donald Trump.

In an interview with Fox News, Bessent reiterated his advice, saying: "Right now, my advice to every country is not to retaliate. Let's see how things unfold, because if you retaliate, things will escalate."

When you impose tariff what are guys thinking. So you except other economy powers to fold hands and let you have your way. You want to export to countries at the rate that favours you and tell your citizens to stop buying foreign goods.

Somehow, I like that the US is taking this action because they keep giving and giving without asking for what they get in return and many countries are taking advantage of it without showing some form of gratitude.

It's just like Nigeria sending troops for peace-keeping mission across West African countries without Nigeria getting something in return, not even large quantities of diamonds. That's the most ridiculous foreign policy I have seen.

I believe Trump's mission in this second term as American president is to show to the world that the United States still holds her pride of place as the most powerful nation in the world.

Trump believes the US, under Joe Biden, had lost her place as the world power. He believes Russia was getting too powerful under Biden and they needed to be tamed.
