French President Emmanuel Macron called on Thursday for European companies to suspend planned investment in the United States after U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping global tariffs on American imports.

"I think what's important, and that's all the work that must be done by sector, that the investments to come or investments announced in recent weeks should be suspended until things are clarified with the United States," Macron said during a meeting with French industry representatives.

Macron said no response had been ruled out yet and suggested using the anti-coercion mechanism, responses targeting digital services and looking at financing mechanisms of the U.S. economy.

Macron added that the response to the reciprocal tariffs would be "more massive" than its earlier retaliation to U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs.

Macron called the tariffs "brutal and unfounded" and a shock for international trade, and that Europe must respond "industry by industry".

Macron seems to seek a futuristic role as the leader of Europe.

I will be against trump if the balance of trade is near equal but if there is a huge deficit l, I don't think any sane country will fold her arms while her country is being taken advantage of.

Manufacturing is no longer a competitive advantage for America. The U.S. simply can't compete in this sector anymore and should instead focus on maintaining its edge in services. Even with a 100% tariff imposed by Trump, goods manufactured in Asia would still be cheaper than those produced in the U.S. Curious to know why?

EU will collectively create a way out for themselves. That's what the deluded Trump doesn't get. Because they have the technological know-how, even thou they have limitations regarding mineral resources.

His approach is too sharp and wrong. Canada will in due time find a way out too, and likely connect with EU. They are even rich, they just need to wake up and stop being lazy.

Trump cannot coerce global manufacturing base to the US via tariff threats. The world will not be able to cope with American labour and infrastructure costs.

He may just end up getting the US economy isolated. That's it.

You see say life no truly balance and humans are unfair against one another. US has been paying high tariffs for years now and Trump decided that it will be an eye for an eye they are complaining. How can your slam US with x,y,z tariffs and Trump increase theirs to half of what they are charged and the world is complaining. You want them to pay more and you want to pay less.

When was the USA being taken advantage of? What was wrong with the US and world economy before now? You have an illiterate president who doesnt even understand what a Tarriff is (he thinks it is a tax strictly on those importing into the US which he can use as punishment). He doesnt know that it is American consumers that will bear the brunt and American lives that will be hurt.
