I don't know if it cost 500k to give birth now, and if it's CS obviously it was unplanned for . I think we should improve our health insurance process to help in emergency like this ... The incident is a very sad one.
A human life is very important.
However, hospitals are business entities out to offer services for a price.
If you have or ever had a doctor friend or relative and they tell you how people refuse to pay after treatment, you'll understand why private hospitals demand money before commencing treatment.
Some people go as far as blackmailing them when they pressure them to pay, calling them as sorts of names.
You must understand that they buy drugs with money, pay rents and bills with money, pay taxes, pay salaries with money.
No doctor should let a person die because of money but people should also do better by paying their bills after treatment.
I am currently battling to recover a huge amount of money from someone to whom I released some items without receiving payment due to how urgent he sounded with pleas and talking like a very good person. It's been almost four months now and not even half of the money has been paid.
I have sworn to myself never to have compassion on anyone ever again when doing business. It's better people call me names than my business crumbling!

My husband and I are medical doctors.
I worked all through both pregnancies and saved up money for MY delivery.
I only started maternity leave 3 weeks before my EDD.
Men are naturally very selfish people.

A reasonable woman should not put her hope on a man.
If women know how much their husbands hate them for real,they will love themselves more.

It's ok for you to use your present position to advise individual parents to have fewer kids. But a blanket stance that says have kids if you can raise 500k is utopia. It is not achievable. Even if it is achievable, it is a terrible idea - I don't even have time to explain the ramifications to you. But I'd just tell you that Lee Kwan Yew tried it in Singapore. He was encouraging rich women to have kids and poor women not too - reportedly sterilised some of the poor women while at it. Today, that country's demographic issues are so bad that once it's 8pm, they start playing jingles on radio reminding people to go home and have sex. They want kids!

A perfect society does not exist. Every society goes through its phases. What happened to that man is sad. But it was NOT preventable. The only way to prevent it would have been for him not to marry or get her pregnant. And the day that happens (poor people, 70-80% of Nigerians, stop having kids) will never arrive.

of course I know it's not possible to ask poor women to stop having kids indiscriminately like rats, after all I can't force adults to stop making bad decisions.

Funny enough there are ways to make having kids undesirable.

If having and caring for children becomes so expensive that it is considered a luxury for the poor, or if they are men and women are penalized for having more than 3 children, then the population growth can be controlled and there will be more resources and jobs for our children and grandchildren.

Here in nigeria, there is family and community support to raise children and ease the burden of parents, no such thing abroad.

It's called an emergency for a reason - you can never be fully prepared for it. Just pray to God you don't encounter one beyond your power and financial capacity.

A friend of mine was in a similar situation months back. He cried to me for help after spending over a million in less than 48hours. Luckily for him and his wife, treatment was not stopped while he was out sourcing funds to cover the outstanding bill.

Your comments and most others on this thread are quite disheartening. Compassion matters even to animals, particularly in matters of life or death as this. Where is our humanity? What has happened to us?? We've become so numb that the sanctity of human life means absolutely nothing us anymore.

3 Children are more than enough.
I had even wanted 2 ,only for the second pregnancy to come as twins.
I always put myself and children first.

you can go for 8 more children after all he's your husband and you came to the world to make him happy. it is only a brainless man and a woman who them don use poverty swear for that will be birthing indiscriminately. I actually logged in to reply to your comment about the commentary section on Dr Freeze post about the other case of a man who fled because his wife had triplets. Those men are thoroughly irresponsible. Men should even be the ones to resist having more children. Sometimes, I don't understand how some Nigerians think.

Truly, women especially modern day women, should be extremely careful who they allow to fertilise their eggs. My secondary school crush told me she declined the marriage proposal from a Canadian based man because he wanted four children. As the first daughter and child of her parents (four children), she knows how financially demanding it's to raise a family with too many children.

The reality is that most Nigerians should not have more than a child. That's the harsh truth.

I had to go and Google the meaning of convalescent center just incase I got it wrong.
There's no way that place in the picture would have handled that woman's emergency situation.

It made sense for them to refer her to general hospital.lProbably they used the 500k to scare them off.

The question still remains didn't she register for antenatal at least at a health center or proper hospital. I am asking because I know Lagos has lots of health centers that offer antenatal and delivery services at very cheap costs. They have cases they take, they have those they refer to the nearest general hospital even at the point they registered because of their cases. Even if things want to go haywire at point of delivery they have their ambulances to take them to the nearest general hospital.

So where did she register?

Doctors are not under a mandate to save lives. Yes, no law would jail a doctor for walking away from or refusing to see a patient. This particular issue has no connection to the health insurance problem in Nigeria. Assuming this man did not really intend for his wife and child to die, it has more to do with the entitlement mentality of the poor in that country, a problem on its own. Why did this couple choose to do this to themselves?

2. In this case, the man painted himself as an entitled individual by blaming his lack of planning and incompetence on the hospital.

3. People have plenty of children because they choose to have unprotected sex, while fully aware they lack the resources to deal with the potential results. It is not a mystery why people do so, and it has nothing to do with the lack of proper health care services in that country.

4. It does not take some magical element to do so. It takes resources to both have and properly raise those 5 children. Those who don't have the resources should have no reason to have those 5 children.

5. The bulk of their suffering — like in this case —is self-inflicted.

A hospital is an essential service, like a school, fire department, or police department. Funding for essential services should come from taxes, industry, and public-private partnerships. Nigeria can more than afford to provide good care for every person in the country, but it doesn't because of this:
