Akinbobola Folajinmi, a Lagos State resident, lost Kemi, his wife, on February 18 due to pregnancy complications.

Folajinmi explained in video clips that have since gone viral on social media that he took Kemi to As Salam Convalescent Centre, a medical facility along the Lagos’ Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ibeju-Lekki. He said it was an emergency but the hospital turned them away after he was unable to deposit N500,000.

Raufu Oyinlade, the owner of the hospital, told FIJ the claim was false.

In the videos, the restless husband struggles to keep his wife, who is obviously weak, conscious.

“Kemi, look at me. Be strong for me. Look at your kids, please. You need to be very strong. I love you so much. God, help me. Have mercy on us. Kemi, stay with me. You know I love you,” Folajinmi said.

In a separate post, the man stated that a doctor drove them away despite pleading to save his wife’s life first.

“The doctor told me to deposit N500,000, and I begged him to start doing whatever was needed to save my wife while I ran around for the money, but they drove us out like they didn’t care,” he said.

Folajinmi says Kemi was rejected because of his inability to deposit N500,000

“Unfortunately, they blindly rejected us and asked me to take her to the General Hospital at Epe, even though the doctor knew that Epe from Lakwe is way too far for her condition. Before we rushed her to Epe, she was gone.”

However, Oyinlade denied the claim on Thursday in a chat with FIJ.

He said Kemi’s condition was worse than what the hospital could handle and she was immediately referred to the Epe General Hospital without demanding any deposit.

On the day in question, a pregnant woman was brought to our centre. My colleague on duty reported that the woman had convulsed twice at home before arrival. Upon examination, it was clear that she required immediate blood transfusion and surgical attention,” Oyinlade said.

Given the complexity of the case, we advised the husband to take her to Epe General Hospital, which is better equipped to handle such emergencies. We did not at any time, demand any payment, as we prioritised the patient’s urgent need for specialised care.

“It is essential to note that the woman was never a registered patient or known at our centre and had not visited us prior to that day. We referred her to a more suitable facility immediately she was brought in, without even transferring her from the wheelchair used to bring her in.

“Regrettably, the following Monday, I became aware of a misleading post on TikTok by the woman’s husband, claiming that our facility had rejected his wife. I am eager to clarify the facts surrounding this incident and provide any necessary context to correct this misinformation.”

Asked whether his hospital had handled emergencies such as Kemi’s before, Oyinlade said, “Yes and severally referring cases that are beyond our scope. We are in a strategic place facing the expressway; emergencies, including road traffic accidents, usually come, and God has used our hands to save many.”

SHE HAD ECLAMPSIA AND WE COULD NOT MANAGE IT

Oyinlade said Kemi had eclampsia, a life-threatening medical condition during pregnancy characterised by seizures in a woman with preeclampsia, which the hospital could not manage.

She was referred because it was beyond what we could manage. Note that she was found pale and needed urgent blood transfusion and that she was said to have convulsed twice at home,” the doctor said.

When asked whether the hospital referred Kemi to Epe because she had no prior registration with the facility, the doctor responded, saying, “We don’t attend to emergencies based on whether they registered with us or not. Our duty is to save lives by attending to patients or refer immediately if it’s beyond our scope.”

The doctor added that he had not been able to speak with Folajinmi since the hospital referred him to Epe.

We do not have his address and phone contact. A number called me on the issue but refused to pick up my calls thereafter for clarification. Note that she was referred immediately, no record of any of them was obtained as she was taken away immediately,” said the doctor.

“God has been using us to save many lives especially the less privileged. An example is a Cameroonian woman who was brought and abandoned by unknown people in September 2024. She sustained humeral and pelvic fractures with associated head injury.

“We had no choice but to manage her as no one was available to take her to a general hospital. We treated and fed her for three months and three days and then reported to the police before allowing her to go because the Cameroonian Embassy said they could not do anything about her on the basis of her illegal immigration into Nigeria.”

There was no way that center in the picture I saw could have managed her case. Refering to general hospital was the proper thing to do.

As for the 500k only God knows who is saying the truth.

The question still remains which hospital/health center did the woman register there are very affordable health centers everywhere in Lagos if she did she would have been monitored from from early pregnancy and signs would most likely have been seen and all these might have been prevented. If she needed to be referred to general, they would have referred her and the general would have been managing her.

As a pregnant woman once your BP is getting to some levels the doctors are on alert.

This story is just so painful.

Let's try and be thinking critically before passing judgement. What if the hospital is not equipped to give her the much needed care, what should they have done? Where did the woman register for antenatal, why didn't her husband take her there when she started having seizures? She had low blood volume and eclampsia, two very critically serious conditions in pregnant women which are easily detected during regular antenatal checkups. The shameless husband should tell us where she did her antenatal.
