Ph.D holder works as cleaner at Ebonyi state varsity, Mgt reacts

A young man of about 45 years old from Izzi LGA of Ebonyi State who has Ph.D in Mathematics, works in Ebonyi state University as a cleaner, a development that has been widely condemned by many Ebonyians who heard about the ugly story.


In an interview with Dr. Enyi Paul Onyebuchi over the development, he acknowledged that he started working with Ebonyi state University as a cleaner in the year 2007 with SSC and over the years,he got approval from the University to further his studies which gave him an avenue to study and have his first Degree, M.Sc and Ph.D in the year 2022 ,but have been working as a cleaner up till date, and had presented his original certificates to school management several times for conversion, but all to no avail. He called on government of Ebonyi State and well meaning Nigerians to intervene and place him accordingly in the University to avoid his Ph.d Certificate becoming a waste.

“I am Dr. Enyi Paul Onyebuchi, I am staff of Ebonyi State University. I was employed as a cleaner. I am still young when I was employed. I was employed as a cleaner because of the condition of things. But decided within me that I will not remain like this till I retire, which made me to further my education.

“We wrote exam for conversion and they played game with it. They said that some of us failed, but when some dignitaries intervened and asked them to provide the answer script, they refused to bring it out. The refused to give us our real mark, they played political game. Up till now, there is nothing like conversion. There is respect and dignity attached to having Ph.D but unfortunately,its looks as if I wasted the money I would have used for another thing.


“I got my Ph.D in 2022; I did my final defence on 3rd Nov.2022. I am in the hands of God, whatever the want to do,let them do. I dropped the certificate and started hustling,one must not feed only in education. If Government feels like placing me where I am supposed to be,, it’s good. But if they refused, I can’t kill myself, Iwill continue to hustle.
“My expectation from government is to place me in rightful place. I think it is high time the gave me what belongs to me. I am supposed to be a lecturer not a cleaner.

“Even my HOD wrote, recommending me for conversion but reaching Vice Chancellor’s office,it was ignored. All my original certificates, including the Ph.D was attached and submitted,but it was a game of who knows who. I am just praying to God, its left for Him to do His own.

When contacted for his reaction,the Public Relations officer of Ebonyi State University, Mr. Patrick Itumo expressed surprise over the issue, saying that it has not been long the University concluded everything about conversion, and many people applied for it but he doesn’t know whether Dr. Enyi applied for it, or why he didn’t pass. He urged him to write to the University Registrar or the Vice Chancellor to register his grievances, pledging to look into the matter.

“Well I don’t know about it,I am surprised to hear this. It has not been long University management concluded everything about conversion,and many people applied for it,but I don’t know whether he applied for it. If he applied for it,I don’t know why he didn’t pass the exam.

“Let him write a letter to the Vice Chancellor or Registrar indicating all these things and also come to our office. Give him my phone number, lets know what actually is the issue.”

That HOD you claim recommended you to the VC may actually be the one blocking your conversion, and not even the VC in whose office it was declined.

From the information in the article, it appears the guy went to the same school to get his PHD. You are now giving another exam to be converted. Are you saying you don't have trust in the quality of PHD you awarded to the guy?

The most annoying thing is that the management would make it look like the young man failed the conversion exam even when we know that the conversion must have been based on whom one knows and some other biased considerations!

Nigerian system is so corrupt that they'll pretend like they wanted to select the best by organizing some serious exams only to dump the exam script and employ those they want to employ based on connections and some biased considerations. The reason why they subject applicants to the stress and risk of traveling for the so called exams/interviews knowing fully well they aren't going to make use of the outcome is what I can't tell. I mean, why not go ahead and employ those you want to employ on account of some bigoted reasons and spare others the stress of coming for your useless interviews

Hmm I can relate to this o! Got ND in 2005 and applied for Conversion and was on target because the then Gov, Óbóng Attah declared Amnesty for those who went to school "Nicodemusly". But the then Dir of Admin in our Parastatal use it as an opportunity to swell his well of "Catch". A number of those lads who accepted to "doggy" him were converted leaving those of us without the kit.

Not until, 2016 after much fight, that I got it. What pains me most was a staff at the State Hqtrs who retired on SGL 07 despite parading 1st Degree for over 10years.

He is working with the school(employed with SSCE) , applied to the school that he wants to pursue his university education and they approved and told him to go ahead, then he enrolled in his bachelor's and continued to PhD but refused to upgrade him from his SSCE they used in employing him as a cleaner. He then applied for an upgrade, he was invited for an exams , he wrote and then they only allegedly collected people they want instead of based on merit.

For the mere fact that the school gave him the go ahead to do his bachelor's and he did same in the same university they should recognize his certification and upgrade his employment.

Note: you must get admitted before applying for the approval. Now, after securing admission, must one have to wait till approval is granted before joining the classes? No!
