FG Orders Federal Tertiary Institutions To Publish Financial, Student Data by FreeStuffsNG(op): 10:43pm On Apr 05, 2025
FG inaugurates 25-member committee to establish Nigerian Education Data Initiative
The Federal Government has directed all federal tertiary institutions to publish critical institutional data, including budget allocations, student population, and funding details on their official websites no later than May 31, 2025.

The directive, which takes immediate effect, was issued by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, as part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s higher education system.

The Ministry noted that institutions must provide full disclosure of their Annual Budgetary Allocation, breaking down expenditure into “personnel cost, overhead costs and capital expenditure.”

“the Honourable Minister of Education Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa has issued a comprehensive directive mandating all Federal Vice-Chancellors, Rectors and Provost to publish key institutional data on their official websites with immediate effect. Aligning Nigeria’s higher education management with global best practices.

“Each institution must provide its Annual Budgetary Allocation in full detail including the breakdown of expenditure across three core areas: personnel cost, overhead costs and capital expenditure,” they stated.

They are also required to disclose their Research Grant Revenue from the previous year, with details grouped into two categories:

“…grants obtained from domestic bodies such as local industries, government agencies, or foundations; and those received from international sources, including foreign institutions, multilateral organizations, and development partners,” they said.

In addition, each institution must publish its TETFund Allocation for the current year, clearly showing the total amount received and how it supports academic and infrastructural development.

Endowment fund
The directive mandates that all federal tertiary institutions must update their websites quarterly with the current value of their Endowment Fund “as recorded at the end of the previous year.”

“further mandates that institutions publish the total value of their Endowment Fund as recorded at the end of the previous year. This figure, which reflects funds donated or invested for the institution’s long-term financial health,” they stated.

The Ministry said this figure “must be updated quarterly to ensure currency and transparency.”

They are also to provide their Total Student Population, disaggregated into undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Websites must be public-friendly
The Ministry emphasized that all disclosed data must be “presented in a clear, accessible, and user-friendly format for public visibility.”

“Websites should be structured in a way that allows the public, including parents, students, and stakeholders, to easily locate and understand these data points,” the Ministry stated.

“To enforce compliance, the Ministry said it will carry out regular audits of institutional websites and apply sanctions where necessary.

“The Federal Ministry of Education will conduct periodic reviews of institutional websites and take appropriate administrative actions against non-compliant institutions.

“This review will be used to gauge compliance and drive policy decisions that promote transparency,” it said.

The Ministry explained that the policy is part of broader reform efforts aimed at restoring public trust in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, improving performance-based funding, and enhancing the country’s standing in global education indices.

Some Heads of institutions are in trouble. Bye to the era of opaque affairs and constant blackmail of everyone that Federal Government is not funding the schools.

It is cheering to note that revolution has stated from the Nigerian Ivory Towers.

State tertiary institutions must follow suit! This is what the unions like ASUU should have been demanding all these years.

The Minister of Education in indeed a worthy Greatest Akokite!

Be refreshing the website of your schools for updates and report them to the Minister of Education if they don't comply.

God bless President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Republic of Nigeria for ever!

This is a very good initiative from the federal government.

Transparency is key and this move will go a long way in ensuring that Nigerians know how these institutions are run.

Fantastic.

This is another wonderful initiative by this government.

I keep saying it, this is the best government we have had in decades.

A few days ago, it was NNPC, and today, this.

All these and more in less than 2 years, and yet many people just won't give the government any credit.

Imagine if every past government had this sort of imagination and political will, how much more progress the country would have made.

Mr Jonathan was in office for more than 5 years, but I can't remember a single significant policy initiative that you can associate with him. Not one!

While it’s commendable that the Federal Government is pushing for transparency in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions by requiring them to publish detailed financial data, the lack of similar transparency from key public figures, like governors, senators, and members of the House of Representatives, raises concerns. These individuals routinely receive budget allocations—whether from FAAC (Federal Allocation Account Committee) or internal revenues (IGR)—yet they often don’t disclose or break down how these funds are spent. Transparency should not be a one-way street; it should extend across all levels of government.

Governors should be mandated to publish detailed reports on their state budgets, including the cost of projects, income from IGR, and the exact breakdown of their FAAC allocations. This will provide the public with an accurate picture of how taxpayers’ money is being utilized, ensuring accountability across all tiers of government. A truly transparent government would lead by example, rather than imposing transparency requirements on sub-organizations while ignoring the accountability needed at the top.

If they actually follow through with this policy, alot of VCs will get indicted. These VCs run our higher institutions like their private property.

Unilag has been collecting endowment fund from students for years but hasn't been paying the deserving first class students. I really hope the FG investigate them and reveal where the money is and adequately prosecute whoever is found guilty in hoarding it.

Students who really deserve funding are not given the chance. Scholarships are not readily available, and the endowment fund which is supposed to be a relief to firstclass students are not being paid! Isn't that cruel?

Every resistance against this policy must be resisted. Any political consideration must be jettisoned. I expect those so called activist like Sowore, Falana to follow up and ensure compliance.

Any resistance should be seen as the problem of our universities.

Let's wait for ASUU and other unions. If they countered this policy, it implies they have been blackmailing the government all this while.

Only those with skeletons in their cupboard fears transparency .

This is a good initiative and every lover of tertiary education in Nigeria must support it.

It's a fee that is charged on every unilag student per session. Its 5,000 per student per year. The money is then paid to first-class student every session (50,000) per first class student.

Unilag has been collecting the 5k from students for years but hasn't been paying the first class students. I can confirm that between 2016 and 2022, they only paid once!
