In a country where NYSC khaki has barely dried from sun and sweat after one year of national service, a new storm is brewing. The Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, has reportedly proposed extending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program to two years.

Yes you read that right. Two full years. One for skill acquisition and entrepreneurship training, and the other for national service.

The proposal: skills first, service later
According to reports, the new structure would dedicate the first year to skills and entrepreneurship development, followed by the second year of regular NYSC postings and service to the nation.

Supporters say it could help bridge the unemployment gap, providing youth with tools to become self-reliant or be absorbed into security agencies like the police or army.

We should be thinking of how to cut it down to 5 months instead.

NYSC should not be a mandatory program. It should rather be optional for graduate who are interested in taking part in it. Graduate with business ideas and innovation who are not interested in the program can be given their accumulated one year allawee in form of interest free loan repayable after two years to invest it as capital to revitalize their innovations. This can help reduce unemployment and still boost production in the economy.

The initiative should’ve ended long ago. It is utterly pointless. Make it either six months, voluntary or end it totally.

So as a doctor who has acquired professional skill, why should I pass through 1 year to acquire skills and entrepreneur skills if my government is managing the economy appropriately. Misplaced priorities to even pay youth corper 77k was a huge challenge.
